Future Computer Memory Aims to Be 1000x More Efficient

Future Computer Memory Aims to Be 1000x More Efficient

Imagine a terabyte of information stored on a portable electronics device — a mobile phone, digital camera, MP3 player, PDA, or laptop. Well, the first commercial product using that technology, " a simple chip," could debut in 18 months say Arizona State University researchers who are continuing to refine the technology. Nano-ionic memory, also referred to as programmable metallization cell (PMC) memory, holds the potential of being 1000x more efficient than flash memory and also reduces power consumption by 99%.

The new memory technology can utilize materials routinely used in CMOS chip fabrication, plus it can be applied to conventional storage solutions. In short, there's no cost penalty for such an upgrade. Not surprisingly, numerous computer and memory manufacturers are interested, some of whom have already licensed the technology.

Computers Hit the Fast Lane with Lasers

Computers Hit the Fast Lane with Lasers Microchips of the future could run significantly faster by emitting laser light pulses. According to researchers at University of California, Santa Barbara, this optical option could rapidly transfer data on and off chips, now considered a limitation for multi-core technology. Working with Intel, the researchers plan to use 25 high-speed lasers atop a silicon chip, each transmitting data at 40 Gbps.

Sunny Outlook for Cloud Computing?

Sunny Outlook for Cloud Computing? How practical is a software-as-a-service concept for employees? Well, if you're a Google employee today, your software, files, and data are already Web-resident in what is referred to as a "cloud computing" environment. Internet access — from a phone, desktop, Wi-Fi coffee house, etc. — is the key to success. Speaking of cloud computing and its future implications, stay tuned for news on availablility of service next year.

Two Alternatives for Wireless M2M

Two Alternatives for Wireless M2M Two alternatives for wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) communication — IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and Zigbee — both provide unique advantages for replacing wired Ethernet networks. This EDN article covers the pros/cons and the intricacies involved, for instance where 802.11 a/b/g should be utilized. Differences in data transmission, power consumption, range, and more are detailed.

Industrial Ethernet Empowers Motion Control

Industrial Ethernet Empowers Motion Control Motion control applications are expanding via industrial Ethernet networks primarily because of improved real-time performance. Experts foresee a majority of apps going the Ethernet way, not only for simpler I/O tasks, but complex motion control as well. Of almost two dozen industrial Ethernet technologies touting real-time performance, only a handful have what it takes to do the job, reports Design News.

Embedded Linux Now Dependable

Embedded Linux Now Dependable A new research study concludes that embedded Linux is on a design par with RTOSs (real-time operating systems) in most instances. The results — founded on 2006-2007 interviews with 1300 developers on hundreds of design projects — apply to commercial embedded Linux operating systems, not in-house Linux developments. The Embedded Market Forecasters' report analyzed such factors as design complexity, on-time completion, tool usage, and much more. (Image: © Larry Ewing.)

Getting the UI Right

Getting the UI Right Today's complex embedded systems should have the optimal user interface (UI), especially for consumer products, where the user experience is key to a product's success or failure. Typically there are tradeoffs to be made from all the options available. Fortunately, all the design and implementation challenges are thoroughly examined in this article.

"No-No" for Used Motherboards

'No-No' for Used Motherboards Here's exactly what you shouldn't do with used motherboards in the battle against electronic waste. Undoubtedly, they do have some recyclable value, but cooking motherboards to recover gold content is not exactly environmentally friendly. Environmentalists have focused on the danger to migrant workers in China, where much of the world's e-waste winds up.

On the "Eve" of Virtual Teaching

On the 'Eve' of Virtual Teaching Both distance learning and online tutoring — two educational areas growing in demand for career advancement — could benefit from a computer program that can detect emotions, say researchers. Toward that end, they have developed a computerized virtual teacher named Eve who can recognize body language and facial expressions. The system can also detect heart rate and skin resistance through a computer mouse.

Canine Computing 101

Canine Computing 101 Apparently, just like humans do, dogs can identify color photos and categorize them using touch-screen computers. Conducted by the University of Vienna, Austria, the research demonstrated how dogs learn to recognize and sort photos of dogs vs photos of landscapes. Now, if they could only read and write, their status may evolve into "man's smartest best friend." (Photo credit: iStockphoto/Rami Ben Ami.)
