Modular Software: Key to RTOSs

Modular Software: Key to RTOSs Thinking at the system level is inevitably the key to future success as embedded and desktop real-time operating systems (RTOSs) move toward convergence says Daya Nadamuni, a veteran analyst. As software morphs into a more modular form, building applications brick by brick or one step at a time becomes paramount without, of course, losing sight of the ultimate goal: "building the palace." Suffice it to say that the more modular the software is, the quicker the application will be built — and quite importantly with fewer bugs. The trend toward more modular software expedites the whole development process, especially when existing target hardware is known.

Electronic Wallet's a Global Go

Electronic Wallet's a Global Go Forget your wallet, just wave your phone instead. Commuters in London and Tokyo already do just that — sometimes entering a personal-identification number — to access local transportation. Now a global standard is being embraced to enable cell phones as electronic wallets. The plan calls for combining a secure chip embedded with credit card info with a near-field communications chip.

Easily Upgrade to USB Connectivity

Easily Upgrade to USB Connectivity Designed to cost-effectively add USB functionality to industrial applications, the latest microcontrollers and an embedded processor feature an optimal architecture that consumes minimal power with no trade-offs in performance. Targeting industrial automation/control, HVAC, security, health monitoring, and consumer applications, the 32-bit devices include bundled software to minimize design time and accelerate time to market.

Smaller, Better, Faster ADCs

Smaller, Better, Faster ADCs Performance targets for the latest analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) demand less current, smaller footprints, and maximum sampling rates. Diminishing size translates into less space for batteries, meaning that less power consumption is mandatory. Examine the specs of three ADCs, including a 150 MSPS device for Wimax, a 1 GSPS version for broadband/satellite, and a third for portable measurement applications.

3D Chip-Stacking Breakthrough

3D Chip-Stacking Breakthrough A new method for stacking microchips in a 3D configuration produces smaller chips that deliver data faster and consume less power. Instead of wired connections in today's 2D configurations, IBM's "through-silicon via" technology etches holes through each wafer layer, and then fills them with metal. This approach cuts wire lengths by 1,000-fold, providing 100x more data pathways than 2D.

Fast Four-Core Blade Server

Fast Four-Core Blade Server With one or two dual-cores, a CompactPCI single board computer (SBC) delivers a performance boost for medical engineering, telecommunications, and transportation applications. The 1.66 GHz SBC features a hot-swappable server blade with a multiplicity of functions and an FPGA to configure I/O. Accommodated memory choices include DRAM, FRAM, SRAM, and NAND flash. Numerous interface options deliver communication, mass storage, and more.

Wearable, Chain-Mail Electronics

Wearable, Chain-Mail Electronics Reminiscent of chain-mail armor worn in the Middle Ages, a miniscule, flexible metal fabric features a network of 500 micron diameter rings joined together with 400 micron links. Researchers predict that the smart fabric — used to detect movement, generate electricity, and cover curved surfaces — could be scaled up to function as wearable computers and electronic devices.
