Chips Keep Cool via Thermoelectrics

Chips Keep Cool via Thermoelectrics In operation, microprocessors do get hot, exceeding 100 C with video processing, for instance. And today as multiple cores proliferate in the latest processors, more heat needs to be dissipated. Fortunately, researchers are refining efficient microrefrigerators that can alleviate the multiple hotspots on a chip. Integrating thermoelectric materials between the chip and a copper square can cool a hotspot by 15 C. Multiple microrefrigerators deliver significantly more cooling. To boost efficiency, carbon nanotubes and various solders are being investigated to minimize interface resistance. Bringing down the cost and increasing the efficiency of the technology is the next order of business toward achieving commercialization.

Full-disk Encryption for All Computer Drives

Full-disk Encryption for All Computer Drives Full-disk encryption will soon be commonplace on storage devices for desktops, laptops, and enterprise-class drives (disk storage arrays and servers). Already being utilized by some manufacturers, the encryption technology is transparent to the user and doesn't slow down processing. Any disk using the three specifications is automatically locked without a password, but requires a "cryptographically strong password" to boot.

Hand-size Embedded Computer

Hand-size Embedded Computer At 130x95x47 mm, a fanless embedded computer is not as big as most human hands. Featuring up to a 1.6 GHz ultra-low-power Intel Atom processor, the rugged box unit uses a +5 V input and functions noiselessly over a 0 to 50 C temperature range. Recommended for auto PCs, digital signs, in-flight entertainment, and health-care applications, the RoHS-compliant unit resists vibrations up to 1 Grms.

I Can Hear You Now with My Femtocell

I Can Hear You Now with My Femtocell Problems with continuous connectivity? No problem if you opt for Verizon's Network Extender that incorporates a Samsung femtocell. Functioning like a miniature cell tower, the device boosts an existing broadband Internet connection to expand coverage to 5,000 sq ft. Notably, it also augments e-mail downloads, mobile Web surfing, and text messaging. Ironically, this correspondent could have used one in his new office today.

New Option for Securing Wi-Fi Networks

New Option for Securing Wi-Fi Networks Japanese researchers have come up with a new, relatively inexpensive tool for keeping the latest higher-frequency wireless networks secure: an aluminum-iron oxide coating formulation that absorbs up to 182 GHz electromagnetic waves, a capability about 4x higher than typical iron-oxide counterparts. Proof of performance was confirmed using a magnetometer. Manufacturing the coating is claimed to be cheap at $14/kg.

"Take Me to Your Leader" Software

'Take Me to Your Leader' Software If aliens from outer space ever land on earth, what language will they speak? Will we be able to communicate with them? There's no need to worry because scientists are already working on the problem. One solution is software that compares "60 different known languages" on earth to determine structural similarities with an alien tongue. But then, a picture is worth a thousand words.

What Will Windows 7 Bring?

What Will Windows 7 Bring? While no one knows what the final version of Windows 7 will deliver to users or when, many checking out the Beta version like what they see. One recent review by TechNewsWorld Columnist Rob Enderle reports a much more positive experience vs Vista. "Fast, slick, and much more intuitive," says Enderle, who installed the OS on four computers. Warnings are less frequent and wireless-network connection is greatly improved. Stay tuned for more.

Beam Up the Data, Scotty

Beam Up the Data, Scotty Cited as a "teleportation milestone" — not the "Beam me up, Scotty" kind of Star Trek fame — is a recent accomplishment by University of Maryland scientists, as LiveScience reports. To briefly recap, the researchers teleported info between two atoms over a 1 m distance. Teleporting quantum info in such a manner could build the foundation for a new kind of quantum Internet that would vastly surpass the performance of any kind of conventional network.
