Virtual Reality for Real

Virtual Reality for Real Undoubtedly one of the next big things in computing is virtual reality (VR) technology. It is actively being developed by a multitude of institutions throughout Europe. Envisioned as a key innovative technology, VR allows users to enter and interact in virtual worlds. This ICT Results article says it's already used in aeronautics, automotive, education, energy, and medical applications. Of particular interest is virtual industrial prototyping to build and develop products at greatly reduced cost and time to market. Later this year, EuroVR, a Brussels-based association will be spearheading the multinational coordination effort and speak as one for Europe's VR industry.

Next-gen Carbon Computers

Next-gen Carbon Computers Researchers believe next-generation computers, chips, and electronics may be made of graphene. Among the reasons are that electrons zoom through the material 100X faster than silicon. Fabricating smaller devices with 2D graphene is easier than with 3D silicon. Finally, the limit to building smaller silicon transistors is almost here.

Testing Tough PCs

Testing Tough PCs Without tough PCs that can withstand harsh environments, logistics and warehousing operations could neither process nor track orders fast. Unlike office PCs in climate-controlled offices, these PCs are typically vehicle-mounted. This white paper delves into the rigorous environmental testing at one manufacturer. [A short registration may be required.]

Communicating via Chemical Reactions

Communicating via Chemical Reactions Researchers can communicate without computers, electricity, optical fibers, or any power source. Sending messages up to 2 km uses light to carry encoded alphanumerics. Infofuses function via chemical reactions of flammable metallic salts on a nitrocellulose fuse. As the fuse burns, the metallic salts release pulses of IR and visible light.

Cool Materials Take the Heat

Cool Materials Take the Heat Materials that dissipate heat make it possible to boost computer power (and engines and nuclear reactors). Vienna University of Technology researchers are exploring the potential of dissimilar composite materials. This video presents one solution for power electronics; 0.1 mm diamond particles connected via silicon bridges within a silver matrix.

Killing the Energy Vampires

Killing the Energy Vampires Why keep wall chargers for laptops, electronic devices, and other equipment plugged in 24/7? If your employer has already instituted energy-saving strategies, you can cut the cord. Learn the typical annual costs and get energy smart. There's also an energy-saving power strip. One switch turns off all wall chargers wirelessly.

Brain to Computer: Post on Twitter

Brain to Computer: Post on Twitter For those whose bodies don't function properly but possess normal brain functions, a new communications system may be just what the doctor ordered. Proof of the pudding is a brain-computer interface that researchers used to post a twitter message. In the future, an electrode cap could empower such disabled individuals to readily communicate.
