More Metal to Fly on Advanced Aircraft

More Metal to Fly on Advanced Aircraft European aircraft maker Airbus announced in July it would undertake development of the fuel-efficient Airbus 350 XWB (extra wide body) to counter the market success of rival Boeing's 787 Dreamliner. The new European design is aimed not only at the 787's customers, but the already flying 777. The 787 enters service in 2008. Unlike the new Boeing model, which has an all-composite fuselage, the 350 XWB will use both advance metal alloys and composite materials for the aircraft body. Boeing has had some manufacturing problems with all-composite structures. Airbus will count on advanced engines and aerodynamics to at least equal the economy of the Boeing design.

Ag Products Promise Greener Processing

Ag Products Promise Greener Processing According to Australia's CSIRO Minerals, using agricultural products in the production of steel results in less pollution and less greenhouse gas generation. For instance, using charcoal instead of coke not only produces less sulphur, nitrogen oxides, and ash, but burns faster to permit processing at more efficient speeds.

Twin Pig Casters Control Plant Output

Twin Pig Casters Control Plant Output Two recently installed 127 metric ton/hour pig iron casting machines handle the entire yearly output (900,000 mt) at an Australian production plant. For reliability and redundancy, each machine can backup the other. The highly automated pig machines permit efficient production of "saleable" iron stock for metal not needed at the on-site mini steel mill.

Nano Gel Structural Healing

Nano Gel Structural Healing Coatings with a nano-encapsulated gel coating for aluminum offer "healing" capability of the coating when scratched. The gel spreads when disturbed to provide continuing protection from a damaged coating. When damaged, charged polymers are released and the corrosion inhibitor diffuses in a gel layer to fill small gaps in the coating.

Magnesium Means Lighter Cars

Magnesium Means Lighter Cars While magnesium weighs a third less than aluminum auto bodies, it must be combined with other metals to become structurally robust. Engineers at the Fraunhofer Institute (Bremen, Germany) head a program called Mg-Chassis. The project, among German, Swedish, and Israeli automakers and research centers, has cast magnesium with aluminum, zinc, and manganese for safe auto structures.

Aerospace Flies to PM Fabrication

Aerospace Flies to PM Fabrication The French Research Group for Industrial Laser Applications recently received a LENS (Laser Engineered Net Shaping) system for use in an aerospace research program. The PROFIL project aims at developing processes for titanium and nickel powder-metal manufacturing and repair of aerospace components. The PROFIL project also involves aerospace firms Dassault, EADS, Eurocopter, MBDA, and SNECMA.

PM Goes Green

PM Goes Green The Powder Metal Industry Initiative is an industry/government effort to prevent pollution from the PM industry. The Metal Powder Industries Federation has prepared a video/slide presentation which gives background on the industry and processes. There is also a fact sheet on the program as well as results from an Initiative workshop.

Food for Thought

Food for Thought Food processing with copper alloy equipment may provide more protection than stainless steel against E. coli bacteria contamination. Researchers at the U.K.'s University of Southhampton (and the Copper Development Association, New York) say when the metals were exposed to E. coli and then incubated for various times and temperatures, the copper-base metals had less contamination.

Lube Greens Cold Metal Reductions

Lube Greens Cold Metal Reductions Less hazardous and more environmentally compatible lubricants can be applied as a coating for cold reduction of stainless steel, nickel, steel alloys, and titanium. The proprietary Coating Lubricant CR is non-flammable and non hazardous because it is not based on trichloroethylene. A water-based version of the lube (CR-W) eliminates VOCs as well.

Hook, Line, and Sinker

Hook, Line, and Sinker Depending on the fish there is more than meets the eye in selecting the proper hook, says Uncle Bob. He deals with the topic of what different steel alloys (carbon, bronze, and stainless) offer in strength and corrosion resistance. No fish tale, you'll want to use a corrosive hook to be a fish-friendly angler.

Trash Traps Mineral Wealth Prospects

Trash Traps Mineral Wealth Prospects With the noted need for metal recycling to cope with expected worldwide storages comes the idea to "mine" landfills for metals. Alcoa's Director of Energy Innovation, Patrick Atkins, feels U.S. landfills contain more aluminum than we can produce by mining ores. The same for gold and copper in electronics — a ton of scrap computers have the same gold as 17 tons of ore — so head to your local dump!
