Alloy Corrosion Culprits Caught

Alloy Corrosion Culprits Caught U.S. Argonne National Laboratory researchers have discovered the mechanism by which carbon atoms penetrate protective oxide scales on alloy surfaces — causing corrosion, brittleness, and then failure. A network of continuous metal nanoparticles in the scales allows the intrusion minus the presence of any cracks. Three advanced imaging techniques confirmed existence of these webs of iron and nickel nanoparticles permitting carbon transport within the oxide scales. The good news is this knowledge has already led to test batches of alloys with greater corrosion resistance having upwards of 10x longer life than current alloys with the same chromium content.

MIM in Everyday Use

Metal Powder Industries Federation

MIM in Everyday Use Machining is not the only route to complex part production. Metal injection molding of these mobile phone flip sliders and hinge barrels enable single movement opening of the clamshell style mobile phone. The components exhibit design flexibility, outstanding material utilization, and the necessary material strength.

Iron Alloy Recovers Precious Metals

Iron Alloy Recovers Precious Metals A proprietary iron alloy allows South Africa's Braemore Resources to recover platinum group metals (PGMs) from ores with high chromium content. Such raw material, which is being increasingly mined, cannot be processed with conventional recovery methods. The ConRoast process "roasts" sulphur from metal sulphide concentrates, then smelting in a DC arc furnace allows the iron alloy to collect the PGMs, as well as nickel, copper, cobalt, and other base metals.

(Stainless) Body by Fisher

(Stainless) Body by Fisher You may remember the "Body by Fisher" tag on GM cars. Now Fisher Coachworks is back making hybrid buses with stainless steel frames, which it claims weigh half as much and get twice the fuel economy of conventional buses. "Our vehicle concepts are based on the strength and durability of Nitronic stainless steel, using low-cost manufacturing techniques," says CEO Gregory Fisher, grandson of an original company founder.

Molding Alloy Cools Electronics

Molding Alloy Cools Electronics Xyloy, a zinc aluminum alloy, can be processed in metal injection molding machines for cost savings vs die cast metal parts. Developed by Cool Polymers, the metal is being touted for electronics applications, including shielded housings and heat sinks. Using the metal in place of plastic housings for electronic components like LEDs further aids in heat dissipation, keeping electronics cool and efficient.

Aluminum Shapes Up

Aluminum Shapes Up Lotus, Aston Martin, and Imperial College London are developing a new three-step process for heat treating, forming, and quenching to fabricate curved parts, such as bonnets (hoods) and wings (spoilers), out of sheet aluminum. Current cold processes experience metal spring back, while hot ones sap strength. The project looks to predict basic science and determine appropriate alloy-die combinations.

PM Prospects OK for Autos

PM Prospects OK for Autos While the slowdown in auto sales is the bad news, the good news is the percentage of powder products in cars is going up, according to an article sidebar in Machine Design. New engines and fuel-efficient six-speed transmissions are bursting with PM products. For instance, the GM High Feature V6 engine has about 36 lbs. of PM parts, more than the total of powder parts in a complete late-1990s-era vehicle.

Learn Online for Powder Prowess

Learn Online for Powder Prowess The Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) is sponsoring a series of 30 min. e-learning PM courses to maintain professionals' skills. The first three now available are: Welcome to the World of PM, Introduction to Compacting and Primary Press Operations, and Introduction to Sintering Fundamentals and Furnace Design. The MPIF Web site also has a short demo to introduce the courses.

Keeping CPUs Cool

Keeping CPUs Cool Danamics' prototype CPU cooler uses recirculating liquid metal to cool computer CPUs (Central Processing Units). The LM10 is self-contained and reportedly uses a special pump design for the "exotic" coolant — probably low melting point, high thermal conductivity Galinstan, a mixture of gallium, indium, and tin. Electromagnetic pumping uses an electric current "driven" through the liquid metal, creating a magnetic field that pushes the fluid through the cooling loops.

Poisson's Ratio Predicts High-Temp Ductility

Poisson's Ratio Predicts High-Temp Ductility Poisson's ratio (transverse contraction strain/longitudinal extension strain) can be used as a screening parameter for ductilizing additives of chromium-based alloys used in development of high-temperature components for energy and power systems, say investigators at the U.S. National Energy Technology Laboratory (Albany, OR). Their computational method shows elements such as titanium, vanadium, zirconium, and niobium increase ductility in chromium while aluminum, germanium, and gallium decrease ductility — with experiments validating predictions.

Engineering Job Interview: The Pegs Can Fit Many Holes

Engineering Job Interview: The Pegs Can Fit Many Holes Victoria Burt notes in a recent column that good engineers aren't necessarily good interviewees and gives tips to separate the wheat from the chaff. Ask, "What's in your car trunk," and find out about planning and safety concerns; or "Do you want to work on a new design or improve existing technology," for which there is no correct answer but will tell you about the person at the core of the engineer.

"Midas Mufflers" Made of Gold

'Midas Muffler' Made of Gold It's only logical that the world's most expensive car, the $2 million DiMora Natalia SLS 2 sport luxury sedan, would have gold components. To protect the occupants (and their money) from heat of the 1,200 hp (yes, that's right) Volcano V16 engine, the composite firewall at the back of the engine compartment is coated with a thin film having a pure, but tough, nanoparticle gold surface to reflect heat.
