Kick the Can Down Design Memory Lane

Kick the Can Down Design Memory Lane The aluminum beverage can offers manufacturing a lesson in successful product development, notes a recent Machine Design magazine article by Howard Kuhn, R&D director of The Ex One Co. Aluminum can history illustrates a 'comprehensive approach' to design, with continuous improvements over 40 years to increase functionality, ease-of-use, and sustainability. The softer bodies and harder lids have separate design requirements. Bodies have become easier to make with new fabrication methods. Lids contain the pressure while needing a critical score line that is easy to open but not prone to cracking and leaks. That's a sustainable design.

Stainless Tubing's Structural/Cost Advantages

Stainless Tubing's Structural/Cost Advantages Stainless can create lighter weight, economical structural tubing for automotive applications such as pillars and beams. Welding rolled sheet into tubes was the challenge. A controlled cooling method prevents cracking during seam welding. Using 410 martensitic stainless steel, developers may be on par with the cost of high strength steel.

Alloys Offer Superior Steel Processing

Alloys Offer Superior Steel Processing Production of two Ferrium alloys originally developed (by QuesTek Innovations) for motor racing will expand uses to aerospace and defense. The high-strength carburizing steels use gas quenching and conventional low-pressure carbonization to minimize distortion, save manufacturing time, and allow 'dialing in' batch case hardness. 900-950 F (480-510 C) tempering boosts thermal stability.

Rare Earth Restrictions by China

Rare Earth Restrictions by China Global rare earth metal supplies could be strained if Chinese plans for a reserve of the materials are implemented. The metals' properties (magnetism, conductivity, and luminescence) are used in low-carbon and other technologies, including hybrid/electric car batteries, catalytic converters, flat TV screens, and wind turbines. Demand could reach 200k metric tons in 2014, 5x that in 2004.

Aluminum Feeds CAFE Improvements

Aluminum Feeds CAFE Improvements It's the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards recently tightened by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Aluminum Association says such a vehicle 'size-based' approach encourages use of lighter materials (aluminum) to improve auto fuel economy and emissions, but with the room drivers expect.

Metal Cladding Saved the Day

Metal Cladding Saved the Day Metal processing alleviated the mid-1960s coin shortage in the U.S. In retrospect, numismatist Ginger Rapsus, notes the industrial demand for silver and storing coins in vending machines pressured the government to develop a material alternative. The result from Battelle Memorial Institute was the lower-cost copper core, copper-nickel-clad sandwich that duplicated silver-coin properties. (View video).

Nano-coatings Tame Steel Corrosion

Nano-coatings Tame Steel Corrosion Nano-technology anti-corrosion coatings developed by a U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology led team may provide improved corrosion protection for aging steel infrastructure. The coatings use metals, ceramics, composites, and infrared light for bonding. They reduce toxic removal of previous coatings and have no need for hazardous chemicals for surface priming.

NIST Supports 'Machinable Alloy' Grants

NIST Supports 'Machinable Alloy' Grants One innovative grant funds developing modeling methods to match advanced alloys with machining processes. The three-year program will integrate micromechanical alloy models with physics-based machining models resulting in 'highly machinable' alloys. It will advance manufacturing processes while cutting development time.

Brass Can Best Stainless, Cut Cost

Brass Can Best Stainless, Cut Cost For non-corrosive environments, brass inserts may offer more economical performance. Brass machines easier, with lower cost than stainless. Its higher thermal conductivity allows faster heating and insertion into plastic, as well as longer life for cutting tools manufacturing the inserts. This author says brass scrap has value near new, but used stainless is worthless.

Cash for Clunkers Not So Green?

Cash for Clunkers Not So Green? The United Recyclers Group says last summer's U.S. federal program to remove fuel inefficient cars from the roads failed once car makers and dealers were supposedly satisfied. The industry organization says its members still don't have enough time to process the 'tsunami of steel' within mandated deadlines. The result has been that recyclable parts from the cars are being crushed rather than removed for reuse.

There's Real Money in Fake Coins

There's Real Money in Fake Coins In the UK, fake one pound ($1.60) coins today average one in every 40. The reasons why include that coins are easy to make with a modest metal-stamping operation and detection is avoided because most people wouldn't validate the coin, or know how. A shop may crank out 10-20,000 a day, with the 'coins' being passed through arcades, pubs, and even a gas station chain with an unscrupulous owner.
