The LC Super Hybrid program aims to provide a lower-cost path to hybrid electric vehicle performance. The idea is to employ a combination of high-power-density lead-carbon batteries and low-voltage switched reluctance electrical equipment to boost and recover energy from thermal engines. The switched reluctance motors used in the system are fairly simple units that include steel, aluminum, and copper but no permanent magnets or rare earth materials, according to this report from Machine Design. Installed in an ordinary 1.4 L VW Passat TSI, LC Super Hybrid technology is said to boost the vehicle's fuel economy to approximately 50 mpg.

New control software for AC drives cuts motor energy consumption by 10-40%, the developer claims. In addition, the algorithms boost the performance and lengthen the lives of motors. The developer is currently pitching the software to manufacturers of variable speed drives. The software could be in commercially available drives by the end of the year.

With this new AC drive, machine builders and end users can simplify the design and operation of their equipment, according to the manufacturer. The drive is also said to reduce installation and configuration time. Features include a compact and modular design, embedded Ethernet/IP, USB programming, and a number of motor-control options.

This video shows a packaging-line application for a brushless DC servo motor with an integrated servo drive. The speaker in this video explains the design and advantages of his company's "piezo legs" motor. When paired with an encoder, the caliper motor can take 20 nm steps with its piezo legs. The speaker also touts the motor's scalability, high resolution, and no-backlash design.

Manufacturing Business Technology describes network communication technology that is improving motor-feedback systems, such as single-cable connection between servo drives and servo motors. For machine builders and users, these improvements lower costs, improve reliability, and reduce installation errors.

The demand for energy efficiency is fueling sales of motor drives. A recent report by IHS predicts large increases in global revenue over the next three years. But even while variable speed drive options are leading the effort to lower electric motor energy consumption, the report reminds motor users to keep the entire system in mind. "To really look at system efficiency," says one industry expert, "we are trying to get beyond the component replacement concept."

In certain air-handling applications, the motors described here can reduce wasted energy as much as 50%. The motors use inexpensive ferrite magnets in a flux-focusing design. This construction, says the manufacturer, provides the efficiency of rare-earth permanent magnet motors at a cost close to that of common induction motors.
