By 2030, worldwide electricity consumption by motors could nearly double from today's levels if steps aren't taken to boost the efficiency of electric motor-driven systems (EMDS), warns the International Energy Agency in a new report. The report, entitled "Energy-Efficiency Policy Opportunities for Electric Motor-Driven Systems," also points out that carbon dioxide emissions resulting from this electricity consumption would exceed 8,500 million tons. On a positive note, a 20-30% increase in the efficiency of EMDS could reduce electricity demand by 10%, according to the report, which also includes a variety of recommendations aimed at cutting the energy requirements of EMDS.

This EC&M article looks at the new edition of the American national standard for the repair of motors and generators. While "Recommended Practice for the Repair of Rotating Electrical Apparatus" (ANSI/EASA AR100-2010) includes best practices for mechanical repair, rewinding, and testing of both AC and DC motors and generators, the article focuses on AC machine repair.

Developed for high-speed operation, this linear induction motor can also be operated at stall, or zero speed, to produce static thrust. In addition to a wide speed range, the motor features a simple, no-maintenance design that can produce 2,900 N at a 3% duty cycle. IronHorse™ MTCP Series premium efficiency AC motors meet or exceed EISA 2007 standards. Though it sounds costly and time-consuming, customization may be a better option than purchasing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, several applications engineers argue in this piece. The authors note that customized components can improve both machine performance and the manufacturing process. In addition, they point out that topnotch vendors can often modify COTS products fairly quickly.
