Blowmolders Optimize Process and Profit

Blowmolders Optimize Process and Profit Extrusion blowmolding is an increasingly popular method for fabricating technical blowmoldings and containers, but high energy costs can offset associated design savings. This report from Modern Plastics Worldwide notes that process control optimization can significantly reduce energy consumption, justifying the expense of upgrading. For example, the article says that 40% of total blowmolding machine energy is consumed in the extruder. Simple control measures such as lowering air pressure for blowing, granulating at night, and using barrel insulation will go a long way to more profitable operation.

Custom Plastic Parts — Limited Tooling Investments

Custom Plastic Parts-Limited Tooling Investments Rogan Corporation has developed a series of universal, two-shot mold bases sized to their machines. This capability allows customers to develop two-shot parts while avoiding the cost of the mold base and frame. This allows customers to limit their tooling investment to cores and cavities only, lowering the customer’s tooling investment by 25% to 50%.

A Hue for Every Plastic

A Hue for Every Plastic If the color red evokes passion, what is the message behind a product available in red? That, more or less, is the gist behind the Clariant Masterbatch ColorForward™ initiative. Intended to help product designers, it links trends in society with color solutions for plastics. For example, the goal of a new plastic product may be to convey quality; ColorForward then points to the tones and textures designed to accomplish that.

Get the Most from your Mold

Get the Most from your Mold When it comes to specifying a mold, it is important to keep the bottom line in mind. That, reports Plastics Machinery and Auxiliaries, means making sure the specifications guarantee maximum productive capacity.

Among the specifying tips mentioned: know a mold's production history by using a cycle counter; ensure efficient waterline flow by specifying the connectors; and consider air valves to reduce overall cycle time.

Injection Molding Gathers No Moss

Injection Molding Gathers No Moss Two new technologies are ramping up business and improving the cost of plastic injection molding: gas-assist molding and water injection molding. Plastic combines with an inert gas to fill a cavity in gas-assist molding, which means less resin and less cooling time. Water injection molding offers more pressure and fast cooling times. Both processes are gaining attention with awards and new clients.

The Flatter, The Better

The Flatter, The Better Italy's leadership in style extends to extrusion technology, as one company has found an ideal formula for improving surface smoothness of polypropylene and PC-acrylic. A flat calibrator system relies on vacuum plates and a pressurized-air circuit to float a profile through the system with less friction. The result: better output, increased cooling, and smoother surfaces.

CAD Tool Woes

CAD Tool Woes Lack of CAD standardization adds to the cost of doing business. A CAD interoperability survey from Moldmaking Technology supports this conclusion with real data about the negative effects of using different file formats throughout the mold design and manufacturing process. In addition to survey results, the report highlights how one Canadian mold shop has responded to the lack of interoperability.

Plastics Processors Go Wireless

Plastics Processors Go Wireless Wireless data loggers for temperature and humidity are helping plastics processors monitor their networks from a PC.

Wiring and installation costs, not to mention location, are no longer limiting considerations. There is no need for downloading data manually; alarm notification is sent to the PC via USB port.

Thin Is In for Polyamides

Thin Is In for Polyamides Thin-walled parts with less injection pressure: two new polyamide grades from Rhodia North America are proving that thinner doesn't mean weaker. Technyl XCell 6.6 and 6 are 10% less dense when used in combination with MuCell microcellular foaming, but are still made rigid to resist impact and high temperatures. Applications include automotive air intake manifolds.

Polyols Please All

Is it possible that one material could please environmentalists and manufacturers alike? Dow Polyurethanes believes so. The company's VORANOL™ VORACTIV™ polyols reduce worker exposure to volatile amine emissions. Product trials indicate Polyurethane foam producers are also pleased with better density, hardness, and cooling rates. Dow hopes to convert most of its customers to VORANOL™ VORACTIV™ polyols in the next two to five years.

Tanks

Tanks AIP specializes in blow molding of large hollow parts, especially tanks. With the addition of their Co-Ex machine in 2005, they will have the ability to produce complex six-layer gas tanks. The six-layer design will replace the traditional monolayer gas tanks used in ATV's, wave runners, and other off-road vehicles.

Pressure Forming Design

Pressure Forming Design A refinement of vacuum forming, pressure formed parts are produced by using a female mold. The plastic sheet is first heated, and a pressure vessel is lowered over the sheet onto the top of the mold and vacuum chamber. Read more about this process and C+K Plastics / Valley Extrusions.

Upbeat in the UK

Upbeat in the UK No more excuses. Plastics and Rubber Weekly, which serves the UK polymer industry, reports a surge in demand for workers with plastic skills. Recruitment in small-to-medium sized plastic molding companies is trending upward, as witnessed at the recent Plastic Design and Moulding Exhibition in Telford, England. Medical, pharmaceutical, and automotive are the hot markets.

Cost Reduction Needed

Extensive plastics manufacturing experience, combined with a strong knowledge of planning and business issues are the overall requirements for this open position in Los Angeles, CA.

The successful candidate for Plastics Manufacturing Cost Reduction Engineer will understand APET manufacturing and demonstrate the ability to analyze and develop manufacturing cost models. Some commuting to Chicago required.

Manufacturing Explained

Manufacturing Explained Count on a top-notch university to explain how everyday things are made. Stanford University's Alliance for Innovative Manufacturing has developed a Web site for kids and adults alike. Using video and audio, the site tells how a wide variety of common products are made. The site then goes on to demonstrate different processes used to make everyday things, from molding and machining, to assembly.

Transparent Polyurethane...

Transparent Polyurethane... ...That's what the sculpture sitting in front of the University of Akron's Goodyear Polymer Center is made of. Artist Dale Chihuly is the first to use the polyurethane — specially developed for weather resistance — as a new medium. About 40 ft high, the innovative sculpture represents the "convergence of science and art."
