Controlling the World's Largest Machine

Controlling the World's Largest Machine Europe's largest particle physics laboratory, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, is a circular particle accelerator 27 km in circumference. Two 350 mega-joule beams — each powerful enough to melt 500 kg of copper — travel in opposite directions in separate pipes. To prevent striking the pipe's interior, special controllers keep the beam collimated and aligned to within 20 microns throughout the LHC. CERN uses National Instrument's Reconfigurable I/O hardware and LabVIEW software to keep the proton beam aligned and safe to operate. These controls afford required timing and accuracy for the LHC, as explained in this video.

Pick Your PLC

Pick Your PLC There's a broad variety of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) available on the market today. This article gives some tips on how to select what you need for a particular application, which may require a simple logic controller (or "smart relay"), a compact "micro" PLC, or a full-blown PLC with networking options.

A Feel for Flow

A Feel for Flow The only way Norwegian offshore oil producer StatoilHydro could detect loss of well pressure was to have an engineer feel the pipe with his hand. For technical reasons flowmeters and cables couldn't be used. The solution — pipe-mounted wireless temperature transmitters to indicate when the warm oil (60 C, 140 F) has stopped flowing.

PROLIST Gets Profibus Backing

PROLIST Gets Profibus Backing Founded last year by BASF in Germany, the nonprofit PROLIST® INTERNATIONAL attempts to standardize detailed device and system descriptions for the automation industry. The goal is to facilitate electronic data exchange between manufacturers and users or between different departments such as ERP and CAE. PROLIST feature lists will now include Profibus interface properties.

Step up to "Servo" Performance

Step up to 'Servo' Performance Stepper designers are working on advanced algorithms that address specific weaknesses, such as synchronization and torque losses when a motor overloads. Refined designs hum along as if they were higher priced servomotors. As noted in Design News, this saves the need to upsize the motor by 25 — 50% to obtain safe operation.

Leave the Field Instrument Where It is

Leave the Field Instrument Where It is Some field instrument manufacturers say their products are so well made they can go for 10 years without needing calibration. Maybe so, but a quick 10 minute check with a handheld calibrator may identify potential problems. And it sure can save a lot of headaches in removing the instrument for bench calibration.

Breakthrough in Light Curtains

Breakthrough in Light Curtains From Germany comes this light curtain innovation: for the first time the sender and receiver elements are combined in the same housing, which means light curtain protection can be extended to a wider range of applications. They can be used where accessibility and visibility are required which would be restricted by fixed barriers.

Consensus: Don't Lay Off Valuable Automation Engineers

Consensus: Don't Lay Off Valuable Automation Engineers A number of managers in the automation industry agree that difficult economic times are not justification to reduce the workforce. If companies have to reduce costs, the best step is to cut back on hours instead of reducing headcount. It's a good time to do in-house training and to streamline engineering activities. Most participants in this Control Design survey concur on the value of retaining employee expertise and retooling in advance of an economic rebound.
