Where Automation Technology is Making a Difference

Where Automation Technology is Making a Difference Automation has "been a key to our growth," declares Mike Nowak, a packaging company founder. Ninety percent of IndustryWeek's "Best Plant" winners say they use lean manufacturing and embrace automation. Examples of automation technology making a difference include smart tooling that adjusts to imperfections and variations in materials, an important consideration in improving efficiency and prolonging tool life. Servo-based spot-welding tips provide information about the material being processed and the amount of pressure being applied, which is particularly important when working with highly-variable recycled materials. In this report, Industry Week examines "The Changing Face of Automation."

Quenching the Beverage Industry's Thirst

Quenching the Beverage Industry's Thirst You can get 50% cost savings and reduce the frequency and downtime of jams on your packaging line by replacing mechanical processes with motion control. In the beverage industry, where processes can run at 2,000 bottles or cans per minute, product loading and handling is the weak link in the processing chain. This comprehensive Motion Control Online article explains the use of automation from filling and capping to palletizing.

Too Strong for Their Own Good

Too Strong for Their Own Good Robots programmed for a fixed path and speed have no finesse; they can cause part damage, tool failure, and personal injury. Managing the applied force is a better option. Servo-current sensing, a closed loop system, works well for grinding, polishing, and deburring applications. If more precise control is needed, such as in medical or laboratory applications, strain-gauge sensing measures the actual force, allowing for adjustments.

The Power of Thought

The Power of Thought Imagine controlling a wheelchair by thought alone. Not only did a team at the University of Zaragoza in Spain imagine it, they built it. A laser on the front of the chair creates a 3D map for the rider who concentrates on the desired location. A network of electrodes attached to the scalp relays information to the chair.

Leave the Research to Robots

Leave the Research to Robots Adam is a scientist — and a robot. He strictly follows the scientific method and has discovered new scientific knowledge about the genomics of a particular kind of yeast. The novelty of Adam's hypothesis has been verified by other scientists, and separate experiments have confirmed the results. "Ultimately we hope to have teams of human and robot scientists working together in laboratories." said Prof Ross King, research team leader.

Penguins Improve Pick-and-Place

Penguins Improve Pick-and-Place Festo has built flexible swimming penguins in its quest to improve gripping technology. That's right…penguins. Working on the theory that nature creates maximum performance with minimum energy consumption, engineers plan to use the same design principles on their adaptive gripping device. Marcus Fisher, head of the design group, says, "With this design, it's possible to grasp objects of different forms and even fragile parts as the gripping fingers adapt to the part's contours."

For Precision Plasma Cutting

For Precision Plasma Cutting The low-profile XTR Robotic Torch offers easy accessibility and high visibility for robotic and bevel cutting operations. Light weight and better flexibility — thanks to cabling improvements — add to its features, as does a teach/position tool for quick setup.

Robots are Safe, Reliable Runners

Robots are Safe, Reliable Runners Robots at the Kentucky Clinic safely navigate hospital corridors packed with people. As the robot carries specimens to the laboratory, it politely announces where it is going, stops when people or obstacles get in the way, and lets humans off the elevator first. In addition to keeping personnel in the draw stations, the robot's time en route to the lab is standardized. As the lab manager notes, "They don't stop and smoke cigarettes or call mom or drink coffee."

Robots Respond First

Robots Respond First Police and fire departments dealing with dangerous situations, such as hazmat, bombs, or snipers, are keeping their personnel safer by sending in robots first. The robots see better than humans, using a combination of regular vision, zoom lenses, and IR. As many as seven sensors can detect chemical warfare agents, volatile gases, toxic chemicals, and explosives. They report back to their handlers wirelessly, a relatively safe 800 m away.

Robots, the Patient Therapists

Robots, the Patient Therapists "Robotic therapy can potentially help reduce impairment…of youngsters with cerebral palsy," says Hermano Igo Krebs, principal researcher at MIT. As patients attempt to make a particular movement, robotic devices guide and assist their limbs. Using this method, the mental effort is rewarded by the correct movement. The operating principle? The brain can rebuild connections through repetition as this inspiraional video demonstrates.
