GlobalSpec: DirectU2 Robotics Systems
April 23, 2010
Industry Trends & Events . . .
The Next Generation

The Next Generation Robonaut 2, affectionately called R2, is a humanoid robot with agile hands and opposable thumbs; it's designed for use alongside workers on the automobile assembly line or astronauts in space. (Despite the name, R2 looks more like C3PO than like R2D2.) "This cutting-edge robotics technology holds great promise, not only for NASA, but also for the nation," said Doug Cooke, associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters. While there is video at the site, this video is shorter and more entertaining.

Short Lifecycles Viable with Vision-capable Robots

Short Lifecycles Viable with Vision-capable Robots Equipped with new integrated vision systems, robots are moving up the packaging line into high-speed pick-and-place operations. Lighting variations are no longer problematic for the new vision systems. Rush LaSelle of Adept Technology explains that the new vision-enabled robots can help manufacturers "accommodate the packaging changes in today's reduced product lifecycle."

Automation Solutions

Automation Solutions Exotic materials and designs are no problem for Med Cell, a fully integrated production machining cell for manufacturing medical devices. The compact system, with automatic loading and unloading capability, handles parts that fit into a 6 in. vise or chuck. The package includes a 6-axis robot with teaching pendant and fully interfaced conveyors, both coming and going.

Creating Organization from Chaos

Creating Organization from Chaos Using "chaos control," a robot combines sensory input with its single central pattern generator (CPG) to test different walking gaits, choosing the optimum gait for the given situation. This robot can navigate around obstacles and react to changing inclines. With a memory device, the robot will be able to negotiate obstacles from memory, without its CPG cranking through various trials. Watch its rather eerie motion here; be patient during the download — it's worth it.

Wireless's Surprise Advantage

Wireless's Surprise Advantage Everyone knows that wireless technology reduces the number of wires and their associated costs. It can also reduce signal noise. At bioprocess technologies supplier Broadley James Corp., the decision to use wireless pH and temperature transmitters produced an added benefit — there were no ground noise spikes in the wireless signal. According to Broadley's president, the battery-powered transmitters are isolated from spurious ground loop potentials "which drive pH sensors crazy."

Save Money, Use 3D Vision

Save Money, Use 3D Vision One company implemented 3D vision and reduced the number of robots needed for a task (and the associated cost of equipment) by 25%. While 2D systems work well for some purposes, 3D systems are more robust and versatile, telling the robot exactly where the part is located. According to this comprehensive Robotics Online article, 3D vision systems are now available as integrated packages with robot controllers.

Advertising with Eco and Boost

Advertising with Eco and Boost Ford Motor Company is using a novel advertising approach at auto shows around the U.S. They are employing the same robots and tool changers they use on their assembly lines to communicate their message on fuel efficiency. The robots, Eco and Boost, use tool changers to pick up various engine components and display them to the crowd from their plexiglass enclosures. I'll bet the robots draw as much interest as the auto parts.

Winding Safely

Winding Safely Winding operations must meet certain regulatory and safety requirements. The Wind-up and Let-off Safety Solution can help manufacturers meet those requirements while decreasing the number of full shutdowns, which increases productivity. The solution can connect to the network in multiple ways, it is simple to install, integrates with existing system architecture, and can be installed on a single machine or across an entire plant.

Upcoming Safety Standards

Upcoming Safety Standards Safety standards have struggled to keep up with the rapid evolution of robots. The current standards, ISO 10218-1, do not address the entire robot system. The new regulations, ISO 10218-2 that are expected in 2011, cover the installation and integration of a robot cell. They will govern wireless teach pendants, allowing only one pendant to be used per robot. They will also address collaborative robots that work side by side with people, synchronized robots, and vision-based guard systems.

Explore and Interact

Explore and Interact Algorithms and the mathematical foundations behind robotics applications and systems is the topic of the Robotics Science and Systems Conference June 27-June 30, 2010 in Zaragoza, Spain. Vision, active learning, human-robot interaction, and motion planning are a few of the topics covered in half and full-day workshops.

Robo-rock Stars

Robo-rock Stars Bon Jovi's "The Circle Tour" has an unexpected sight — five industrial robots rock to the beat. Each robot's articulated arm holds a 6 ft x 9 ft LED video panel weighing 700 lbs, which displays real-time concert footage. The robots' motion is graceful and precisely choreographed to match the music. The programming "could bring a totally new thought pattern to be used in advanced manufacturing applications in the future," says programmer Andy Flessas.
