The Newest Spin on Electronics

The Newest Spin on Electronics In 1948, scientists at Bell Labs created something called a transistor, igniting the spark that has created the entire semiconductor industry and all of its progeny. Now, engineers at the University of Delaware hope to place the industry atop another precipice. They have created a technique for controlling a computer's ones and zeros using the spin in silicon electrons (spintronics) when they experience a magnetic field instead of an electric charge. The resulting circuitry will be many times faster than existing solutions and will extend the life of silicon as the primary (and least expensive) semiconductor substrate material. View a video on spintronics.

Shrinking the Cost of Electronics

Shrinking the Cost of Electronics Researchers at Georgia Tech have devised a technique that they call "two-photon absorption" to drive 65 nm, 3D multiphoton lithography. The approach involves coating wafers with a particular polymer (DAPB) that becomes insoluble to wash only at the very focal point of a laser. They claim it will cost considerably less than existing alternatives.

Farming Out the Fab

Farming Out the Fab Shrinking circuits to the atomic level means committing to expensive wafer-processing equipment and other infrastructure. Hewlett-Packard has announced that instead of manufacturing these smallest circuits themselves, the company is licensing the technology to a Silicon Valley startup. The contractor will use HP-developed processes to fabricate wires less than 50 atoms across. [Short Registration required]

Probe Marks Can Reduce Yield and Reliability

Probe Marks Can Reduce Yield and Reliability More multi-chip packages and other complex architectures have aggravated the consequences of damage from probe tips that occurs during device testing. Probe marks reduce device quality and reliability, especially in high-stress applications such as automotive electronics. This Test & Measurement World article explores the challenges and presents some practical solutions.

How to Measure Tiny Currents

How to Measure Tiny Currents

Semiconductor applications require measuring miniscule currents — in the Nanoampere range. However, determining the desired level for a measured current can prove difficult. This EDN article outlines the misconceptions and other issues that crop up. In one case, for example, a fingerprint confused the test results.

Keeping Your Cool

Keeping Your Cool With more powerful ICs, design engineers strive to reduce devices' heat dissipation and power consumption. But breakthroughs remain elusive. So how can you cool the systems containing these devices? This piece from How Stuff Works describes the principles behind liquid-cooling, a relatively expensive but often necessary alternative to fans and heat sinks.

Stacking Saves Space

Stacking Saves Space As handheld products shrink, the pressure mounts to increase functionality without creating thick and unwieldy designs. One solution stacks packages on top of one another — package-on-package (PoP). Because the individual packages have already been tested, this approach ensures a device's integrity before attaching it to the board.

Move Over Silicon Wafer

Move Over Silicon Wafer On most substrates, individual transistors and other semiconductor devices must be closely related, limiting the expansion of semiconductor capabilities. Researchers at the University of Illinois developed a method that can deposit different types of micro and nanoscale ribbons, wires, tubes, and bars onto substrates having a broad range of electrical and mechanical properties.

OSHA Takes on GaAs

OSHA Takes on GaAs With the growing popularity of GaAs as a semiconductor material, it isn't surprising that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration would get involved. This comprehensive Web site addresses hazards from both the material and the steps in its manufacture, including ingot growing, wafer processing, epitaxy, and device fabrication.

Legal Border Crossings

Legal Border CrossingsA shortage of skilled workers in the U.S. encourages companies to import talent, using H-1B visas. Potential employers say the government does not grant enough of these visas to fill available highly skilled jobs. American workers contend that H-1B visa holders depress salary levels for everyone.

Ancient Relatives Come to Call

Ancient Relatives Come to Call Now and then an archeological find turns what we thought we knew about human evolution on its head. Analysis of the skull of a 29 million-year-old primate indicates a much smaller and less-complex brain than anticipated. Duke University Primatologist Elwyn Simons hypothesizes that the larger brain must have evolved much later than previously thought.
