Plan to Test Before You Build

Plan to Test Before You Build Not all sections of a semiconductor are equally likely to show defects. As feature sizes dip below the wavelength of the light performing photolithography, engineers find that certain design characteristics are more likely to fail than others. This report on the recent Design Automation Conference in Test & Measurement World suggests that designers need to gather the information used in test to determine what sections fall into that category and to try to prevent them before the designs ever move into manufacturing. In particular, the panel suggested that engineers focus on small delay defects, test for low power designs, and implementing the compression of test vectors. How do you track defects?

Etched Foil Heaters - Semiconductor and Wafers

Etched Foil Heaters - Semiconductor and Wafers Thermal Circuits introduced HTB etched foil element heaters to the semiconductor industry to heat acid in wafer processing baths. The five-sided etched foil heater wraps the corresponding five-sided inner bath vessel with a combination of uniform and profiled heat. The etched foil heating process is designed to quickly bathe boatloads of wafers and other parts.

Design Bigger Wafers with Smaller Features

Design Bigger Wafers with Smaller Features Cramming more circuits onto a large wafer to take advantage of 45 nm manufacturing technology requires that engineers have design tools adequate for the challenge. This item from EE Times reports a design platform created for exactly that purpose. Claims say the technique will reduce circuit area by half while increasing speeds up to 20%.

Major Breakthrough from Minor Process Tweaks

Major Breakthrough from Minor Process Tweaks Improving gate performance at the 45 nm feature size represents a considerable challenge. That feat was accomplished incorporating titanium nitride and polysilicon gates along with some changes in implant and etching steps — with only minor adjustments to the overall wafer fabrication process. The technique allows adoption by semiconductor companies using their existing process equipment.

Test the Little Circuit Features

Test the Little Circuit Features Verifying wafer quality requires testing during several production steps, especially when developing carbon nanotubes and other next-generation technology. This Evaluation Engineering article suggests creating a wafer map of features that meet/don't meet predetermined metrology parameters. The method allows process adjustments or rejection of defective devices in respiratory gas monitoring devices and liquid-media biomolecule detectors.

How Long Is Too Long?

How Long Is Too Long? Testing complex devices represents a tradeoff between test comprehensiveness and test time. Knowing where to draw the line can mean the difference between missing critical defects and overheating and damaging devices under test. This discussion describes some of the critical considerations. Although geared to a specific test philosophy, the information is universally valuable.

Connecting Ever-Smaller Dots

Connecting Ever-Smaller Dots In constructing complex semiconductors, engineers have to find the most efficient path between circuit structures. This Design Automation Conference paper strongly recommends starting each routing task from scratch and attempting to construct a single coherent solution, rather than starting with a less-than-optimal first-pass and adjusting it later.

Matching Package Type to Application

Matching Package Type to Application How do you decide what package to use when building a particular component? Package size, number of pins, anticipated production volume, and cost all play a part. This article from Semiconductor International will help in that critical decision. It explores several leadless designs — describing advantages and disadvantages — for manufacturing high-volume, low-cost consumer electronics.

The Spin Starts Here

The Spin Starts Here Engineers at Cambridge University and the University of Delaware have found a new approach that uses the spin of the electron instead of relying on electric charge to determine whether a logic bit is set at either 1 or 0. The breakthrough will prolong silicon's life, and delay the demand for more expensive alternatives such as GaAs.

How Pure is Pure?

How Pure is Pure? Dopants in semiconductor materials change their behavior. But how do you precisely determine dopant concentrations when they make up such a tiny percentage of the atoms in the lattice? The University of Missouri research reactor offers a service to provide that information. Their Web site lists the measurable impurities and minimum detection levels.

Still Moving When it Stays Still

Still Moving When it Stays Still Looking at a stationary image is not a stationary activity. It turns out that if your eyes actually remained fixed, the image in front of them would fade. Tiny eye movements ensure that different parts of the retina are in use, reducing fatigue and increasing visual acuity. This surprising finding — including a clever optical illusion example — comes from BBCNews.
