Outsourcing for Semiconductors

Outsourcing for Semiconductors Across the electronics industry, OEMs are reducing their production cost and time to market by delegating actual manufacturing to contractors specializing in that part of the process. Few makers of personal computers, cell phones, and other consumer goods actually make anything themselves. An increasing number of semiconductor companies have adopted a strategy called asset-lite manufacturing. Reducing the infrastructure to conduct business makes a company nimbler and better able to respond to changes in customer tastes or underlying technology. Dramatically reducing the value of assets owned comparably increases that important financial statistic — return on assets.

Air Bearing Performance without Air Bearings!
Steinmeyer, Inc.

Air Bearing Performance without Air Bearings! Steinmeyer announced an innovative, cost-effective decoupling arrangement for ball screw drives that enables our standard PMT 160 series stages to achieve breakthrough performance — namely straightness and flatness runout of 50 nanometers or less! And we do it using mechanical cross roller bearings instead of large and expensive air bearings. See more at www.steinmeyer.com

Thermocouples for ASM Epsilon Reactors
Conax Technologies

Thermocouples for ASM Epsilon Reactors Conax Semiconductor offers a full line of high-quality quartz sheathed thermocouples for Epsilon Reactor family. Available are Generation 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 versions. Generation 2.0 can provide 40-90% longer life than the standard OEM product allowing more wafer production per reactor between maintenance cycles. Many styles are on the shelf for same day shipment.

Solutions From an Unlikely Source

Solutions From an Unlikely Source Who expects to solve a problem facing the next generation of electronics technology in the scales of a Brazilian beetle? Yet engineers looking to apply photonic crystals to optical computing have accomplished that. The scales' iridescence offers a solution for constructing 3D diffraction gratings, which will eventually create internal lasers in all-optical chips.

Another Silicon Substitute

Another Silicon Substitute As electronics become more complex, reducing silicon transistor power consumption becomes a major concern. Cooling requirements and skyrocketing energy costs further emphasize the problem. A recent Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute grad demonstrated how to construct practical transistors from gallium nitride (GaN) that offer lower power requirements and better performance.

How Green Is My Packaging?

How Green Is My Packaging? Building environmentally friendly device packages for high-volume manufacturing requires more than eliminating lead. Avoiding hazardous substances such as halogens — particularly brominated flame-retardants — also deserves attention. This article describes Intel's efforts to develop lead-free interconnects and halogen-free packages. It examines the research path and the enabling technologies.

What Makes a Good Bonding Wire?

What Makes a Good Bonding Wire? Once inside a device package they are nearly invisible, but bonding wires can spell the difference between a properly functioning device and trash. Most device manufacturers concentrate on connecting them correctly. But assuring device quality requires carefully considering the wires' composition and other physical properties.

Testing When It's Really Small

Testing When It's Really Small How sensitive is your design to process variations when device feature sizes fall below the wavelength of light? According to this Semiconductor International article, more than most engineers realize. Because minor deviations can dramatically reduce process yields and increase production costs, both fault models and process-control models must be more responsive.

Keep Complex Plumbing from
Plugging the Drain

Keep Complex Plumbing from Plugging the Drain Test engineers recommend that complex electronics be designed to allow easier testing. And, as device complexity increases, the clamor becomes deafening. In Test & Measurement World, Senior VP Antun Domic reemphasizes this critical step in efforts to reduce costs and ensure product reliability in IC manufacturing.

Loaded Dice Control the Process

Loaded Dice Control the Process One way to maximize the quality of devices on a wafer is to control the conditions on the wafer's surface. Measuring those conditions presents a considerable challenge. But suppose you put instrumentation directly on the die to feed information directly to the process equipment, making on-the-fly adjustments to real-time conditions?

Doping Silicon in New Ways

Doping Silicon in New Ways What happens when you change the combination of materials deposited on a silicon surface? This report from the newsletter of industry consortium Sematech examines the results of efforts reported in recent literature to try new material combinations. Issues include gate compositions, specific deposition techniques, and process temperatures.

Moving on Up

Moving on Up So how do you end up in the upper echelons of your company? Once upon a time, you had to come from marketing. But according to this report from The Economist, the Executive Suite today is occupied by a much wider array of specialists. Other factors include your longevity with the company and your job history. By 2001, women accounted for 11% of chief executives. And recent studies show that making it to the top in Europe is a wilder ride than either in the U.S. or Japan.

Playing Games with Your Mind

Playing Games with Your Mind What drives technology — is it business or games? Mice were invented at Xerox PARC 30 years ago because "executives didn't like keyboards." For playing games, even mice and joysticks prove less responsive than today's hard-core gamers would like them to be. According to this report from The New York Times (registration required), the next generation of the technology will respond to the electric impulses from gamers' brains and the involuntary contortions of their facial muscles. [A short registration may be required.]
