Soft Times Lie Ahead

Soft Times Lie Ahead Like the rest of the economy, the latest predictions suggest that the semiconductor industry will experience a difficult 2009. Weak demand for everything from consumer electronics to cars and industrial equipment will result in slow or negative growth for semiconductor manufacturing. This Fitch Ratings report from marketwatch.com examines the trends in various segments of the market, speculating on their relative vulnerability to the current economic trends and how they will impact our industry as a whole. Companies are already responding by slowing expansion plans, laying off workers, and transferring some manufacturing capacity to lower-cost parts of the world.

Fast Waves Look Inside Wafers

Fast Waves Look Inside Wafers You can look inside a semiconductor wafer without using damaging X-rays. European researchers have a method for creating terahertz waves with wavelengths between 0.1 and 1 mm. Their high frequencies can probe the inner structure and provide detailed images of wafers and other solid objects for industrial quality applications.

Nanotech Film Fields Fastest FETs

Nanotech Film Fields Fastest FETs Researchers at IBM recently took a giant step toward replacing silicon in semiconductors by fabricating transistors from graphene — monolayers of carbon atoms similar to the material used for constructing nanotubes. The new transistors run at 26 GHz, making them the fastest field-effect transistors (FETs) ever built. As a next step, the company will improve the gate dielectric materials. The paper announcing the new development came from the IBM Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY.

Memristors Help Chips Get Greener

Memristors Help Chips Get Greener Occasionally, the electronics industry creates a new technology. The development of a memristor has spawned a hybrid memristor/transistor chip. A memristor alters its resistance based on the magnitude and direction of an applied voltage. The hybrid devices cost less, contain fewer components, run faster, and consume less energy.

Building Up Instead of Out

Building Up Instead of Out Any big-city architect will tell you that if you want to save on real estate and avoid urban sprawl, build skyscrapers. Ten years ago, Solid State Technology proposed that approach for increasing the performance of semiconductors without increasing their footprint. This column looks back discusses the wisdom and mixed successes.

Verify, Verify, Verify

Verify, Verify, Verify How do you know your design will work the way you intend it to? Engineers have always tested their designs, but at what point have you tested enough? This EDN article divides verification into categories, exploring how those categories fit together. The bottom line, according to one expert, is that there is no automation for thinking.

How to Test the Very Small

How to Test the Very Small How do you test semiconductors shrunk to the realm of nanotechnology? According to Evaluation Engineering, the smaller the targets, the greater the care required to create an accurate test. Techniques include separating low-level signals from their larger counterparts and employing shielding to minimize capacitive coupling.

System Functions Not Cast in Stone

System Functions Not Cast in Stone Manufacturing entire systems on a single chip carries an inherent drawback. The resulting systems have little operating flexibility. According to this speculative piece in embedded.com, in 20 years the limitation will be all but gone. Programmable systems-on-chip will be common, assembled at the micro-level during production.

Take Off the Mask

Take Off the Mask One way to improve manufacturing throughput is to skip a process step. European researchers suggest when making semiconductors to consider eliminating the mask. It removes significant cost and another opportunity to introduce defects. Researchers say advances in manufacturing techniques make the approach practical.

Reach Out and Touch Someone

Reach Out and Touch Someone Whether you are looking for a job, trying to advance at your current job, or simply assessing your place in the market, you need more information than you can gather on your own. So, who knows what you don't? That simple question is the principle behind networking. While you may not feel comfortable engaging other people that way, according to this piece from The New York Times, there is no substitute.

Another Piece of the Martian Puzzle

Another Piece of the Martian Puzzle For life as we know it to exist at all, let alone to flourish, requires certain chemical combinations. Now that the Mars probes have found water on the red planet, they still need to find other evidence of past habitability. According to BBC News, the NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter recently discovered carbonate minerals as well. Although not enough to make Mars the latest vacation spot, it increases the possibility that it may have once harbored extraterrestrial life.
