The 1,700 mile TransCanada Keystone XL Pipeline, which would carry up to 900,000 barrels of oil sands crude and bitumen from Canada to Texas, took a step forward when the U.S. State Department found it would have no significant impact on the environment. The project still faces court challenges, and charges of political influence peddling that could derail the plan. Plans call for 112 mainline valves along the pipeline, and two mainline valves at each of 30 pump stations. If a leak is detected, isolation valves would close in about 12 minutes.

A thermoelectric-based energy harvesting device converts small temperature differences into milliwatts of electrical power that can power actuators, valve solenoids, sensors, and other devices. Water hammer elicits visions of hydraulic shock, thermal shock, flow shock, and differential shock, but Plant Engineering outlines 16 ways to prevent it. For example, use warm-up valves on steam-line isolation valves larger than 2 in., add a drip leg trap upstream of a modulating control valve, or design pipes so that gravity will drain away from processing applications.

In water supply applications where volumetric flow rates or water pressure needs to be precisely controlled or reduced, International Water Power reports on plunger valves that can control and regulate pipeline pressure losses and control flow rates. Based on the throttling principle, the valves feature continuous narrowing towards the seat to change the flow rate.

As workloads increase and salaries stagnate, the typical engineer is actually satisfied with his job, says an Automation survey of 4,700 engineers worldwide. The largest number of responses came from the engineering services segment with an average $113,074 salary. Professionals in the valves, fittings, fabricated metal products segment, take home $108,750, up 0.7%, ranking fifth in terms of industry segments. Check out salary breakdowns.
