While the IEEE 802.11ac standard is set to be ratified next year, we all know technology doesn't wait for anyone. In that regard, chip makers are already dipping their toes into the waters of 60 GHz Wi-Fi, which promises to deliver up to seven times faster speed than 802.11ac. In fact, some chip makers have already released products boasting these speeds, such as the point-to-point streaming devices shown here. But it's actually the products operating in the 60 GHz frequency band set to debut in 2014 that are expected to blow away existing competition.

Plant operators are taking advantage of standardized communication that they once believed to be cost-prohibitive and difficult to implement. The WirelessHART standard overcomes price and physical limitations of the plant environment by use of a field device and a WD-H communication module. Together, they exchange wireless data in process automation.

The Wireless RFID Reader DL770 enables warehouse operators to take RFID anywhere it's needed on the plant floor — from controlling inventory to unloading at the dock door — thanks to WLAN connectivity. With a read range up to 120 cm, the unit can capture and store a range of data related to a variety of warehouse management operations.

Tests on an Airbus aircraft successfully showed that wireless sensors attached to the plane's fuselage can be sufficiently powered by the temperature differential created during takeoff and landing. The sensors can monitor the health of the aircraft and wirelessly transmit the data to the maintenance system. In theory, the researchers believe the sensors would replace battery-operated and cabled sensors that add weight to the aircraft.

A dynamic mapping app is an updated version for the iPad and iPhone. Its dynamic capabilities enable pilots to turn their phone or tablet in any direction and still view mapping details with clarity. This is in contrast to static maps that keep map labels in a fixed position, claims the company. Enhanced cloud computing and chart annotation are other features of the app, which is offered as a complimentary update for existing subscribers.

ULTRA Series high efficiency, high density rectifiers are designed for demanding networking energy applications. They deliver an industry leading efficiency > 96% from full load down to 30% load. The ULTRA's perform in a wide temperature range of -40 C to +75 C, operation up to 13,000 ft and high reliability with an MTBF > 500,000 hour.

Anatech Electronics multiband multiplexers combine transmit and receive paths into a single antenna or split signals from a single antenna into multiple base stations. They can combine or split two ways (duplexer) or three ways (triplexer) with up to six wireless bands in any combination, regardless of the wireless standard.

The NetSense Solution includes a network of sensors that can detect broadband threats. Phoenix Contact introduces a new industrial WLAN 802.11a/b/g/n radio for high-speed wireless Ethernet communications. The FL WLAN 5101 offers high-speed wireless networking up to 300 Mbps, meeting the needs of the most bandwidth-demanding applications such as IP-based video surveillance, plant networking, and mobile operator access for programming and maintenance.

TIA's TSB-1213 standard, available now from IHS, is intended as a guide to wireless network operators, FAP (Femtocell Access Point) vendors, and other infrastructure vendors to assist in the deployment of 3GPP2 femtocell systems. As femtocell systems evolve and their standardization continues into subsequent system releases, this Overview will be updated accordingly, within those subsequent releases.
