RFID is being used to help reduce the number of pedestrian-related forklift accidents. This Pedestrian Alert System is fitted to the forklift and detects pedestrians via RFID active tags worn by workers. The tags emit pulsed signals several times a second, activating the on-board system to let the driver know that a worker is nearby. Pedestrians are also notified of a forklift in the vicinity via a buzzer or LED signal.

A Brazilian industrial equipment manufacturer, EBSE, has reduced the paperwork related to managing its supply chain by switching to RFID for tracking and managing components. The RFID tags placed on components store all information related to materials and equipment used in production. Now, EBSE can keep track of material arrivals and departures, data related to equipment testing, and maintenance history.

NASA is working with Kansas State University students to develop a wireless technology for space suits. The suits will rely on biomedical and telecommunications sensors to monitor an astronaut's vitals during flight. The goal is to enable journeys that go deeper into the solar system. Previously, KSU students developed wireless devices that helped search for water and life on Mars.

What will Alec Baldwin say? After several months of testing, the FAA will allow pilots at American Airlines to use iPads in the cockpit to replace paper manuals. Estimates show one iPad saves 35 lbs of paper, equating to fuel savings.
