Going 3D with LCDs
Two researchers explain how to turn an ordinary LCD display into a 3D display, just by changing the backlighting. Parallax displays started stereograms, progressed to polarized glasses, and progressed to patterning on the front of the display. But patterning the light behind the display offers some attractive features as well.

A Screen is All You Need
Why pay extra for a keyboard on your next netbook? A netbook is mostly LCD touch-screen with USB ports, memory, and Linux-based operating system. Follow the LED Road
Forget billboards — this color-changing floor made from 15,000 LEDs measures 95 sq m. The glass floor was designed by UK-based architect Darnton Elgee's Mari Stassen and built by light-maker Kubic of South Africa. The display uses 134 modular elements, and is destined for use in a large furniture store in Dubai.

Signage in the Round
Flat billboards work fine for car traffic, but not so well for foot-traffic that goes every which way. A signage design provides LED-based HD resolution in-the-round. Cylindrical displays can be at average eye-height, and use optics to provide the same experience with fewer LEDs — and lower electric bills.

Touchscreens at World Mobile Congress
Scratch a blogger and you get snark. The blogger is Dan Tynan at Computerworld, and the subject of the blog is the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona. The snark is based on all the 'touch-screen stuff' competing with the iPhone. Increasingly sophisticated graphics, high-quality video, and touchscreens are the wave of future cell phones.

Solar Cell (phone)s?
Both Samsung and China's ZTE displayed solar-powered cell phones in Barcelona. Recharging a cell phone is a hassle, so going solar makes sense. But cell phones use considerably more power than a small radio or a calculator (mobile devices that run off solar cells). Can they be efficient enough to run on solar, or is it another gimmick?

An article in the UK's Times Online describes a breakthrough in filter technology that could enable large OLED displays to act as programmable wallpaper, with comparatively low power requirements.

Touch — Not Just for Miniscreens
Sure, mobile gadgets benefit from touchscreens, but what about bigger displays? Above 24 in., the average user is sitting a bit farther than arm's reach, and controlling the screen via remote. This DigiTimes article says that Samsung is out to prove me wrong, with a 32 in. LCD with touch-sensitive IR technology.

Gearing Up for DisplayWeek
The economy is down, but if displays are your business then DisplayWeek is too big to miss. The show runs May 31 - June 5 in San Antonio, TX. Calling Dick Tracy
Nowadays anyone can have a shoe phone, not just Maxwell Smart. And anyone can also have a cell phone on their wrist, ala Golden Age crime fighter Dick Tracy. The devices offers a touchscreen display, voice recognition, VGA camera with video calling features, 2 GB of internal memory, and a text-to-speech function. The irony, of course, is that most cell phone-users stopped strapping on wristwatches years ago — instead using the clock on the phone display.
