A holographic material that can be refreshed every two seconds may provide the enabling technology for a holographic videoconferencing system. The photorefractive polymer, combined with the rest of the system of cameras, computers, LEDs, as well as a laser and an Ethernet link, makes it possible to capture, transmit, and write full color holograms in near-real-time. This major step forward is not yet a holographic version of Skype, but because it is easy on the eyes and requires no glasses, if the frame rate increases it could one day challenge other 3D display technologies.

These active glasses for 3D viewing allow higher resolution images than passive colored or polarized glasses can. They incorporate LCDs that act as shutters synched to the screen, blocking one eye's view of an image meant for the other eye. The new glasses provide switching times of around 1 ms — plenty fast enough to trick users into thinking that the view is unobstructed. Because speed is key to some gamers, while others need smooth lines or reduced after-images, Mitsubishi has introduced a monitor with an unusually high refresh rate that will satisfy all three. By controlling its LED backlight and using a double-speed (120 Hz) interpolation technology, the 23 in. LCD monitor offers high definition display modes that can keep up with the most demanding games.

Prototype transparent screens that double as windows recently debuted at Japan's FPD International show. The display doesn't show from the back, and could show advertisements on store windows, although screen size is limited. Future OLEDs need better transparent electrodes than the standard indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent electrode used today. The U.S. Department of Energy is funding an effort to combine Plextronics' proprietary hole injection layer material with Cambrios' proprietary transparent electrode material — and make the resulting layer manufacturable.

As e-readers increase in popularity, some book lovers bemoan losing the experience of holding paper — but what if your e-reader was made of paper? It could be cheap, even disposable. By electrowetting paper, colored droplets are re-arranged on a paper substrate. This can be used to produce text, photographs, and video.

Don't toss your Duracells yet, but a tiny generator made of nanowires has managed to create enough juice to power a blinking LCD. The researchers used nanowires to create a device that generated electricity when squeezed, with options for other ways of generating power from vibration or other movements. If the development continues apace, in a few years your cell phone may not need a battery at all.

Using rear projection and motion-sensing technology, researchers in Finland created a touchscreen display from a block of ice. When users touched the ice, virtual flames followed their hands. The demo is not of practical use, but it does show that almost anything could be turned into a display screen.

Lenticular 3D video schemes inevitably reduce screen resolution because each eye only sees some of the pixels on the screen. A thoughtful analysis feature by Shinya Saeki in Nikkei Electronics Asia describes the technical issues to combat the resolution loss: better image quality by brightening screens and lowering crosstalk between the views.

Forget touchscreens: researchers demonstrated that test subjects were able to manipulate digital images with just their minds. When research subjects had their brains connected to a computer displaying two merged images, they could force the computer to discard one. The study was designed to understand how the brain processes information.
