Carbon Fiber Lacks Traction in Auto Market

Carbon Fiber Lacks Traction in Auto Market Despite its advantage in weight savings over metal, carbon fiber still has a long way to go before it will gain traction in the automotive market. A leading expert in the field of materials science for the auto industry says composites and their supporting technologies must overcome a number of significant obstacles before they will be competitive with, or a replacement for, metal. First and foremost, the price has to come down. This column comes from High Performance Composites.

Finish Erects "Barrier" to Water, Stains

Finish Erects 'Barrier' to Water, Stains A Swiss firm has created a fabric finish that uses special micro-sized particles to create a 3D structure on textile surfaces. Called Barrier, the finish blocks water, oil, and stains from adhering to the surface and can also reduce use of conventional fluorine-based repellent chemicals by as much as 60%.

Softening Hard Protective Fabrics

Softening Hard Protective Fabrics Flame-retardant apparel can be a life saver, but it also can be uncomfortably harsh for the wearer. Now a new formaldehyde-free softener has been created that uses silicone fluid encapsulated in a silica shell to add softness and hydrophobicity to protective fabrics, without impacting their flame retardancy.

Carbon Fibers
Asbury Graphite Mills

Carbon Fibers Precursors are chosen to be materials that metamorphose into graphite-like structures. Spinning is designed to orient the graphite-like molecular structure of the fiber parallel with the fiber axis. This results in the orientation of strong covalent molecular bonds along the axis of the fiber where stress is applied. Learn more.

Textile Testing
Atlas Material Testing Technology LLC

Textile Testing Atlas' history started in 1918 with light fastness testing instruments for the textile industry. Today, we still help guide the critical decisions in design, manufacturing, and purchasing of textiles and garments by helping detect the materials and processes that cause fading by light.
