Sustaining Growth in Man-made Fibers

Sustaining Growth in Man-made Fibers The man-made fiber industry has made huge strides since the advent of the leisure suit, with polyester and other synthetics now accounting for more than 60% of world fiber consumption. However, rising energy costs, wildly fluctuating raw material prices and the unstoppable trend to more environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and "natural" products, is putting new strain on the industry. Sustainability now appears to be the key word for producers seeking to "sustain" their growth and profits. Textile World explores these new challenges, and opportunities, facing the man-made fiber industry.

Accelerated UV Testing for Textiles
Solar Light Co, Inc.

Accelerated UV Testing for Textiles Solar Light Research has a desire to create new technology that will help define the UV testing industry. Many textiles will fade rapidly under sunlight. An environmental test will show how much they are fading and allow you to determine if you need another textile or more UV inhibitor for your dyes.

Fibers May Prevent Toxic Shock

Fibers May Prevent Toxic Shock An antimicrobial, hollow-core fiber could help prevent toxic shock syndrome associated with tampon use. The fiber technology, described in an international patent, can also be used as a fluid transfer component to improve the performance of diapers, sanitary napkins, bandages, and other personal-care items.

Why Water Can't Soak This Fabric

Why Water Can't Soak This Fabric Researchers at the University of Zurich in Switzerland have developed a super-hyrdophobic polyester fabric that stays dry — even after it is submerged in water for months. The effect was created by coating the textile fabric with a layer of spiky silicone nanofilaments.

More Colors for Elastic Fiber

More Colors for Elastic Fiber Swimwear could get a lot more colorful thanks to a Japanese company that has developed the "world's first" cationic dye-dyeable polyurethane elastic fiber. Called LYCRA®fiber T-909B, the fiber can be dyed in a single bath with cationic dye-dyeable polyester, is super chlorine resistant, and has the great stretch of Spandex.

Renewables Take the Front Seat

Renewables Take the Front Seat In a drive toward sustainable seating in automobiles, Johnson Controls has succeeded in replacing petroleum-based polyurethane in seat padding with natural-oil polyols. These renewable resources include castor, canola, palm, and soy oils. Company engineers also have developed what they call the "Synergy Seat," a lightweight solution for reducing seat mass.

Coating Nonwovens with Nanofibers

Coating Nonwovens with Nanofibers A solvent-free nanofiber coating technology has been developed to improve performance characteristics of nonwovens used in filtration and barrier applications. Called Nanoweb, the media can be supplied as a coating to any nonwoven base. This, in turn, provides a microporous structure for enhanced process control and durability.

Wiping Up Toxic Spills

Wiping Up Toxic Spills Cleaning up a toxic mess could become much easier, thanks to a nonwoven decontamination wipe developed by researchers at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health at Texas Tech University. In tests involving mustard gas and other toxic agents, the Fibertect™ dry wipe outperformed 30 different decontamination materials.

Mannequin "Models" Socks and Gloves

Mannequin 'Models' Socks and Gloves At Germany's Hohenstein Institute, a thermally-segmented model named Charlene is helping engineers measure the wear and sleep comfort of socks, gloves, and children's bedding. The measuring system even generates heat and moisture, allowing researchers to simulate sweaty hands and feet.

Yarn Feeder Creates 3D Carpet

Yarn Feeder Creates 3D Carpet You won't need special glasses to see the 3D effects created in carpets produced using the AutoTuft machine with its new variable yarn feeder. The automatic yarn-feed feature was shown at the annual Domotex floor coverings show in Germany. It makes 3D sculpting effects by changing the yarn feed to tuft different pile heights in the same design.
