A Google patent application sketches a concept for a wearable computer, with a head-mounted display that enables hands-free control of household appliances like refrigerators, TVs, and garage doors. The device would collect operating information from appliances and project virtual controls on the display. Device-appliance communications could be implemented using radio-frequency, optical, or acoustic technologies to create the ultimate remote control. If you think an electric vehicle with only three wheels has to be a performance laggard, think again. The Torq Roadster goes from 0-60 MPH in about four seconds and can reach speeds exceeding 100 mph, according to this Engadget piece. The vehicle's DC motor is relatively cheap but doesn't allow regenerative braking. Watch the video to see an impressive test drive.

Thanks to the latest LED and fiber-optic technology, these lightweight sports vests give night-time runners and bikers high visibility. The plastic fiber features a transparent solid gel core, clad in a crystal clear Teflon sleeve, for maximum brightness along its entire length. Triple A batteries give as much as 20 hrs illumination.

Researchers at Hewlett-Packard Labs have built a small prototype multi-angle, glasses-free 3D display that could enable smartphones, tablets, and watches to produce hologram-like visuals. The prototype creates 3D images that seem to protrude in front of and behind the display using a special backlight and an etched diffuser that sends light in 64 different directions. The technology could eventually be adapted for televisions as well.

Wearable electronics promise to play a big part in the mobile revolution, but the hoopla over smartwatches evokes more questions than answers. What is a "smartwatch?" The two commentators in this NY Times blog speculate on what this gizmo will look like, what functions it will perform, and what chance it has to succeed.
