No Heart Strings Attached

No Heart Strings Attached The 'Internet-enabled heart', a wireless cardiac medical appliance, now promises excellent heart health care at a distance. The patient need not be present for the physician to monitor heart rhythms or address atrial fibrillation events — RF transceivers send data in the 402-405 MHz range, jumping to channels with the least interference. Greater power transmission range and more effective power use result, bringing vital information to doctors as well as a new measure of autonomy to the world of cardiac patient care.

Engineering Team Behind First Mass-Produced Catalytic Converter Receives 2008 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award

Engineering Team Behind First Mass-Produced Catalytic Converter Receives
2008 GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award
On Tuesday, October 21, the GlobalSpec Great Moments in Engineering Award was presented to a team of engineering, research, and development professionals from General Motors in honor of the 35th anniversary of the creation of the first catalytic converter emission control system for cars.

This small band of professionals from General Motors and its AC Spark Plug Division conceived, designed, led the assembly, created, and tested the world's first production-ready catalytic converter emission control system for vehicles. Their work paved the way for unleaded fuels becoming viable, ultimately resulting in significant health and economic benefits to hundreds of millions of people in the United States and around the globe.

Richard Klimisch, Ph.D., General Motors' first catalyst expert, accepted the award on behalf of the team. Alan Taub, executive director, GM Research & Development, and Robert Stempel, past GM chairman and one of the nominees, also addressed attendees. Read the full story.

Coatings Control Corrosion

Coatings Control Corrosion A multi-functional coating technology promises to bring superior chemical, corrosion, temperature, and abrasion resistance to today's appliances and components. Called electroceramic coating, the new process is designed for aluminum, titanium, and aluminized ferrous metals. The new process requires less time than traditional paint finishing or electro-coating, and the equipment takes up less space on the factory floor.

I Can See Clearly Now

I Can See Clearly Now An extra clear liquid plastic aids the creation of a range of colorless parts for consumer appliances and automobiles. The transparency enables designers to visualize internal structures, lenses, and other optical components, and create fit and function parts. It offers flexibility and durability using two of the most widely used thermoplastics — ABS and polypropylene.

Getting Over the Inertia

Getting Over the Inertia Five- and six-axis MEMS inertial sensors are promising for all kinds of low-cost MEMS devices, from consumer home health products to industrial robots. A new joint industry-based collaborative is integrating one company's inertial testing expertise with another's background in MEMS inertial sensors to develop cost-effective, high-throughput testing of the sensors.

Envisioning Quality

Envisioning Quality A company that makes thermostats used to control and monitor temperatures in household appliances decided that it needed to install an inspection station to improve the reliability of its components. The new station uses a vision camera that inspects each component for specific qualities or defects, including cracks, contact angles, ceramic separation, and the geometry of its electrical connections, all within 3/10ths of a second.

Control in a Split Second

Control in a Split Second One digital television manufacturer is implementing port switching technology, giving users under one second switching between multiple devices connected to their sets. The port switching technology works with high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) equipped sets, switching sources, such as Blu-Ray DVD players, game consoles, or portable media devices.

At the Touch of a Button

At the Touch of a Button What are the trade-offs for appliance designers choosing subsurface digital switches over traditional touch controls like mechanical switches and push buttons? Traditional buttons offer the easy tactile user feedback that is a little more complicated to get for subsurface switches. Some solutions include providing a vibratory response when a button is selected or haptic technology that allows subsurface switches to feel similar to mechanical switches.

Sensors and Processors Add Up to Less Cost

Sensors and Processors Add Up to Less Cost Robert Cravotta, technical editor at EDN magazine, discusses the trend toward designing more sensors and microprocessors into robotics, autonomous vehicles, and mass-produced appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines. Declining costs for sensors and processors means greater opportunity for differentiation, creating intelligent systems that can sense, interpret, and respond to their internal conditions and surrounding environments.

OLEDs Not Ready for Prime Time?

OLEDs Not Ready for Prime Time? Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) may be making news these days but Panasonic is not convinced. OLED televisions 30 in. or larger aren't destined to appear on the market any time soon, says Toshihiro Sakamoto, the electronics giant's president. He's previously estimated that OLED TVs could arrive around 2015, but hinted it could be even later. Meanwhile, Sony has unveiled a 1-mm-thick, 11 in. OLED display, and Samsung partner KDDI is touting its 3 in. WVGA display that will appear in commercial products "shortly."

The "Staycation" Affects Gadget Trends

The 'Staycation' Affects Gadget Trends People seem to be buying lots of popcorn poppers and jar openers and tea makers, according to this report, while the electric rotisseries and chocolate fountains gather dust in the cupboard. There is a certain type of fashion that pervades the appliance industry, and companies must be able to predict what's hot and what's not. Perhaps the best way to predict what appliances people will want in their homes is a matter of economics: since more people are staying home and watching movies instead of going to the theater, they obviously need a way to make their own popcorn.

Next Stop — the Holodeck Images you can touch, that mimic the real world. Every Star Trek fan understands the concept. Achieving it has just taken a step forward. According to this item from BBC News, a Japanese company has adapted ultrasound waves to exert pressure that a person would perceive as a solid object. While not yet rivaling the 24th century equivalent, it will soon add a new dimension to interacting with computer games.
