If You Build Green Appliances, Will They Buy?

If You Build Green Appliances, Will They Buy? The message at the recent Consumer Electronics Show was clear: prove your wireless products are green by design and consumers will buy. And they will pay more for energy-conscious, environmentally-smart appliances than for non-green systems. This includes green manufacturing processes, green packaging, and even recycling provisions once the product becomes obsolete. The Consumer Electronics Association expects that greener products could be the financial boon that the wireless industry needs. Do you think green could be enough to reverse the industry's gloomy economic conditions? Are you ready for ultra-efficient electronics?

Plastic Bottles to Cell Phones

Plastic Bottles to Cell Phones To stay en-vogue, Motorola introduced a cell phone made from recycled plastic bottles. It uses 20% less energy to produce the phone. Also, up to nine hours of talk time is possible, reducing charge time and energy use. Even the phone's brochure is green, made from vegetable-based inks on 100% recycled paper.

LCD TVs Go on a Diet

LCD TVs Go on a Diet It's a new year and design engineers have resolved to make TVs thinner. Check out the slimmest liquid crystal display television that measures in thinner than most mobile handsets at only 6.5 mm. The TV integrates an LED backlighting system and a proprietary 240 Hz motion technology and is available in 40 and 55 in. screen sizes.

Memory Design Drives Appliance Storage

Memory Design Drives Appliance Storage In audio appliances and computers, it's all about the memory. Asian university researchers designed a type of memory that stores data thermally. Today's memory is stored electronically using a fixed voltage. With advances in nanotechnology, heat memory could be available soon, paving the way for a new breed of storage devices.

Backing-in to Touchscreens

Backing-in to Touchscreens Fat fingers, tiny screens — why would anyone but the petite want touchscreens on their mobile devices? This concept lets places your fingers on the touch pad behind the touchscreen. Icons move in sync with finger movement. The LCD isn't transparent, but it looks as though it is. Check out the video on New Scientist.

Seeing the Light

Seeing the Light Bright handset displays are nice, but hard on batteries. Developers are introducing alternatives to liquid crystal displays (LCD) to improve power consumption and readability. Energy-efficient bulbs use 75% less power than LCDs. Another uses natural light, and even less power. MP3 players will be first to feature new lighting.

Who Needs a Power Cord?

Who Needs a Power Cord? This year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) displayed WiTricity — appliances from blenders to cell phones and TVs were operated by wireless electricity. One company showed how its technology turns electricity into an invisible laser that can be beamed to a solar cell and converted back into electricity. Currently, 1.5 W of power can be generated and sent 10 m.

Zero-turn Motors in Appliances

Zero-turn Motors in Appliances A pair of battery powered gearmotors power small vehicles such as wheelchairs, patient beds, AGVs, material handling carts, and commercial lawn care equipment. Power is applied to opposite wheels; when the vehicle needs to turn, one motor runs in reverse direction for applications requiring zero turn radius maneuvering.

Capacitor Kicks Audio Range

Capacitor Kicks Audio Range A polymer tantalum capacitor design offers a significant decrease in printed circuit board (PCB) spacing. The 'undertab' termination design permits reduced equivalent series inductance (ESL). This saves space and improves frequency range. Devices using this design include ultra-compact handheld consumer, audio-circuit, and power-line applications requiring high capacitance.

Dick Tracy Watch Becomes Reality

Dick Tracy Watch Becomes Reality Answering a video call on your wristwatch may soon be possible thanks to the development and production of the two-way Wrist TV by two manufacturers. Both devices offer a touchscreen interface, but one has video and offers two hours of talk time on a single charge. The communications device is slightly more than half an inch thick and has a touchscreen interface with three buttons. It offers two hours of talk time on a single charge. The other lacks a camera and broadband capabilities.
