Moving Towards Full-motion Video

Moving Towards Full-motion Video Wireless data transmission is so ubiquitous these days that most of us take if for granted when we use cell phones, TV remotes, and notebook PCs. But this EDN column argues that wireless video may have a harder time gaining widespread acceptance. Silicon-on-glass (SiOG) technology is one of the process tools scientists are counting on to deliver ever better imaging and video capabilities to mobile electronics. Existing processing techniques are complex and limited in performance. SiOG promises higher resolution and full-motion video, but at much lower power consumption, as this five-minute video from a key industry player explains.

Can't Crush Packaging
Can't Crush Packaging

3M's Protective Packaging, a one-piece thermoformed system, eliminates the need for additional packaging materials to protect fragile electronics. The Clamshell or Box closures have crumple zones, just like your car does, to absorb shock and revert back to their original shape after impact. The packs can be made from 100% recyclable materials and can be recycled again or reused.

Clean, Green Electronics

Clean, Green Electronics This line of halogen-free adhesives is designed to be used in mobile phones, PDAs, laptops, and other electronic devices. The new adhesives sport chemistries that can adhere to virtually any surface. They also ensure that when the device reaches the end of its life, recycling the components will not pose a serious environmental threat.

Wet and Wild Electronics

Wet and Wild Electronics Today's personal electronic devices can withstand an incredible amount of abuse; being dropped, kicked, stepped on, and shuffled through purses. But get these gadgets wet and it's game over. See how product development engineers focus on creating unique water-proof and dirt-resistant cases that give users a new level of carefree abuse.

Nano in Your Ear: a Flexoelectric Motor

Nano in Your Ear: a Flexoelectric Motor Researchers have discovered a nanoscale motor in the human ear that mechanically amplifies sound. In effect, the ear utilizes a mechanical amplifier since it "uses electrical power to do mechanical amplifications," says Professor Richard Rabbitt, University of Utah College of Engineering. As they move to and fro, hair-like tubes magnify quiet sounds in what is described as the flexoelectric effect.

DC Motors with Drive

DC Motors with Drive DC motors are finding applications in everything from motorcycles to outboard motors for boats. This EngineerLive article discusses the rising demand for brushless DC motors. The reason: DC motors have distinct performance advantages such as their great power density and their precise speed and torque are relatively easy to control.

Appliances Getting Smart About Energy

Appliances Getting Smart About Energy As wireless becomes key to controlling appliance and home automation energy use, one company introduced RF transceivers for remote data management. Designed for the Smart Grid, the transceivers are for home and building use. One features an integrated communications processor for remote control of ventilation systems, access points, and more.

Lights, Camera, Cell Phone

Lights, Camera, Cell Phone Today's cameras and cell phones need to do it all — video as well as still photography — demanding image sensors that excel in both areas. Here's a nine megapixel imager that can deliver sharp, high-resolution still images, or provide high-definition (HD) video in 1080p format. As a plus, it's designed for enhanced image capture under very low-light conditions.

Super Sensors on iPhone

Super Sensors on iPhone Apple's iPhone uses three key sensors: an accelerometer, an ambient light sensor, and a proximity sensor. Sensors says the accelerometer has driven the development of hundreds of applications (watch the video). Instead of developing these apps internally, Apple invited any outside developers to contribute their knowledge and expertise.

Appliance Crutch or Creative Catalyst?

Appliance Crutch or Creative Catalyst? Jonathan Ive, Apple's senior designer, triggered some controversy recently when he blamed the rise of rapid prototyping for distancing designers from the physical design process. Just pressing "print" is an obstacle to designers being close to the materials and the objects they're fashioning, noted Ive. Offering a different viewpoint is University of Waterloo computer graphics professor Craig Kaplan, who argues that prototyping tools have triggered a wave of innovation, not just in manufacturing, but in art and design (see video). How much value do you place in rapid-prototype technology?

MEMS Mikes, Time Reversal, and Noise Negation

MEMS Mikes, Time Reversal, and Noise Negation In the world of electronics, there is always too much noise. Chinese researchers have come up with a way to boost the voice quality of mobile speakerphones and laptops in noisy environments. The application combines MEMS microphone arrays with a time-reversal method. The latter allows the original signal to be recovered. Results include clearer voice with an improved signal-to-noise ratio. The time-reversal method is used for sound localization in ultrasound medical diagnostics and in underwater communications. The design includes an active acoustic muffler in an electro-mechanical Helmholtz resonator built on a compliant piezoelectric composite diaphragm. The device creates the coupling between acoustic and electrical energy.
