Noise Control a Key Concern
Noise Control a Key Concern

Customers of home and commercial appliances want appliances that are both more efficient and that run quietly. But recently those demands have been expressed more in terms of sound quality that can only be met using a Source-Path Receiver model. This Appliance Design article suggests using diagnostics to ensure sound quality both at the system and the component level. Most products are acoustically labeled by using their sound power level. OEMs give sound power specifications to suppliers, who must ensure that components comply with specifications. But that approach doesn't guarantee sound quality when the component is installed.

Built to Last
Veetronix, Inc.

Built to Last Unlike mechanical switches, Veetronix switches are magnetically actuated. No moving parts touch the switch contacts. The contacts are hermetically sealed, thus preventing air containing dust, moisture, or gases from contaminating the contacts. Switch reliability is monitored constantly, and field failures are almost unheard of... even after millions of actuations!

Appliance Product Design Services

Consider Copolyesters

Consider Copolyesters A winner at this year's International Plastics Design competition is the iSecure Syringe. Its four components are formed in a single injection mold, reducing cost. All components are non-bonding (mechanical or molecular), allowing selective disassembly by the user. The process also required the use of three different polymers.

Finishing the Trim

Finishing the Trim Appliance and electronics design trends change. Customers want bold colors and metallic accents. You need to eliminate secondary processes and compliance requirements associated with painting or plating. Pre-colored polymers aren't new, but now they can be molded into production-ready parts. Weld lines are moved to areas that customers don't see.

Test Large Functions on Small Products

Test Large Functions on Small Products Your mobile phone is supposed to communicate with a GPS satellite in synchronous orbit around the Earth to tell you where you are. But how can a manufacturer ensure that the feature works? It isn't as though you can build a GPS test setup in the lab to find out. Here, from Telecoms Korea, is a description of a practical test approach.

This Meter Motivates

This Meter Motivates Here's one for the small set: a blood glucose meter that links to game consoles like the Nintendo DS and DS Lite. Children with diabetes will be rewarded by earning points that unlock new game levels as they adhere to testing regimens. The device will be available in the UK and Ireland, according to E-Health Europe.

World's Fastest Appliance Motor

World's Fastest Appliance Motor What can you do with a motor that spins at 104,000 rpm? Barely 2 in. in diameter (56 mm), the 200W brushless DC motor took 10 years to develop. The motor will initially be used in a handheld battery-operated vacuum cleaner. It's twice as efficient as the brushed motors used previously.

Optimize Portable Power Efficiency

Optimize Portable Power Efficiency In a recent Power Electronics article, System Applications Manager Ken Marasco tells how to optimize power systems for portable electronic devices. He discusses how to achieve increases in autonomy (for notebooks, mobile phones, MP3 players, and PDAs), and how to address power consumption design challenges. He also presents two case studies.

Peeping Through a Small Screen?

Peeping Through a Small Screen? Would users be interested in a big image, but with only a portion of it displayed at any one time? By combining a cell phone and a 4.1 in. screen with a MEMS motion sensor, one company says it can show a 2000 in. (presumably diagonal) display. Two videos present an augmented reality (Wii motion) picture larger than 166 ft!

Touchscreen Tap Technology

Touchscreen Tap Technology Enter the high tech household's latest addition. The TV isn't the only screen in the bathroom anymore (see video). And the new touchscreen isn't just presenting information: it also spouts water, lit up like Niagara Falls. But the really interesting thing about this water tap from Brazil's iHouse is that it uses facial recognition to store your temperature and volume preferences. It even lets you access your email.
