Materials May Make/Break Appliance's Year

Materials May Make/Break Appliance's Year The appliance industry, like other segments, has focused on product improvements and cost reductions to carry the corporate bottom line in this economic downturn. But that aid may soon be coming to an end. In the appliance industry in particular, last year's drop in commodity (materials and components) prices provided much needed cost savings. This Appliance Magazine article says Sweden's Electrolux reported margins of over 8% in 2009's third quarter. Electrolux President and CEO Stråberg credited a dip in commodity prices and maintained prices in other areas as a significant factor in earnings improvement. Rock-bottom material and component prices appear to be headed back up.

TV to Go

TV to Go Demonstrating at last month's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, manufacturers debuted numerous mobile devices — smartphones, laptop TV receivers, netbooks, pocket TVs, etc. — that can receive digital TV signals at 80 kph in a moving vehicle. The devices use the latest mobile standards for moving receivers. Local broadcasters are working to make coverage complete.

Burner Turns on 100W Halogen Lamp

Burner Turns on 100W Halogen Lamp Using a spherical ceramic burner, a German lighting manufacturer can make halogen lamps of between 75W to 150W. The most common request from lamp designer and consumers has been for 100W power, which the company provides for halogen metal halide lamps. Compared with cylindrically shaped burners, these burners offer improved light distribution, color stability, and luminous flux loss.

Ceramic Rubber to Power Medical Devices

Ceramic Rubber to Power Medical Devices Engineers at Princeton University created a ceramic-based material that converts mechanical energy into electricity. Power for pacemakers and mobile devices could result. The technology uses zirconate titanate (PZT), a piezoelectric ceramic material that generates an electrical charge when pressure is applied, and clear sheets of silicone rubber to create what's called "piezo-rubber chips."

Medical Device Noise Negating Tips

Medical Device Noise Negating Tips When less than totally effective shielding allows EMI/RFI (electromagnetic/radio frequency interference) to affect circuit measurements, there are steps that can be taken to minimize the effects of noise. In a recent Design News article, the author presents numerous valuable tips on what features to look for and what actions to take in correcting potential noise sources.

Plastic's Bearing in the Home and Office

Plastic's Bearing in the Home and Office Polymers substitute for metal in many products. Plastic bearings offer advantages in mail sorting machinery, multi-function printers, and even ATM machines. This article lists non-magnetic and anti-static properties — but also lists limitations. Semicrystalline thermoplastics can be used where steel is too heavy or susceptible to corrosion.

New Power in in Power Tools

New Power in in Power Tools Cordless drills and power tools have added a lot of technology in their more than 20 years of existence. This Tools of the Trade article reviews eight cordless drill/driver tools that offer small size and considerably improved performance. Much of the size and weight advantage comes from using lithium-ion batteries. Added technology includes adjustable clutches and dual speed ranges. See who the winner is.

Mower Drive Matches User Stride

Mower Drive Matches User Stride Size, weight, and performance are also important in the design of lawn and garden equipment. This family of mowers features a variable drive system. Mower speed is dictated by how far you pivot the handle, allowing operators to match their stride. The design focus is providing a quality lawn care solution in a compact, durable package.

Training to Avoid Human Error: Video

Training to Avoid Human Error: Video Things go wrong in manufacturing. The way to lasting success comes from how well you can identify the source of a problem, and then learning from it to prevent future problems. These authors discuss the merits of various types of training. They say the greatest benefit comes from a balance of teaching an operator how the system works, and then providing root cause and task-related training. They assert that success also requires management support and lots of practice — as skills are developed through hands-on activity. This video shows a training program for those involved in ethanol and biofuels plants, but the approach is applicable to all areas of manufacturing.

Power Cells for Portable Appliances

Power Cells for Portable Appliances Fuel cells are becoming the new way to provide clean, reliable power for portable consumer electronics, as a replacement for household appliances including power tools and gasoline and diesel generators, and even to power first responder communications. This handheld fuel-cell charger, which uses bottled water, breaks it down, and funnels power to any USB device. Campers can use it to charge their cell phones and laptops in the wild. Pike Research says the 100-500 W power level fuel cell will be the second largest segment by 2016.
