Streamlined Circuit Board Testing for Appliances

Streamlined Circuit Board Testing for Appliances Find failures 5x faster and easier in circuit board assemblies for just about any kind of appliance — dishwashers, dryers, ovens, refrigerators, washers, and more. Thanks to customized connecting cables, streamlined testing using one station is now possible by selecting a test profile in software. In fact, this new test system simulates operating characteristics of additional circuit boards even if they're not physically present. The approach should be a boon to companies finding the cause of failure during the warranty period. Here's a thought. Consumers would undoubtedly buy a portable device like the trouble-code readers for autos to identify appliance malfunctions.

Built to Last
Veetronix, Inc.

Built to Last Unlike mechanical switches, Veetronix switches are magnetically actuated. No moving parts touch the switch contacts. The contacts are hermetically sealed, thus preventing air containing dust, moisture, or gases from contaminating the contacts. Switch reliability is monitored constantly, and field failures are almost unheard of... even after millions of actuations!

Fast Prototypes Take the Heat Off
3-Dimensional Services

Fast Prototypes Take the Heat Off 3-Dimensional Services of Rochester Hills, MI, is a rapid prototype firm that specializes in design, engineering, and analysis, in-house tool construction, and complete build of first off parts and low to medium volume production runs. Prototype parts are typically provided up to 70% faster than conventional prototype shops are able to offer.

Not Your Basic Little Black Dress

Not Your Basic Little Black Dress The basic little black dress that should be part of every woman's wardrobe has gone high tech. Enter the M-dress. Featuring a built-in mobile phone, this ensemble does away with frantically trying to find a phone in enough time to answer it. You simply raise your hand to your ear to answer it. Lowering your hand hangs up the call.

Mobile 3D to Be

Mobile 3D to Be Wired's Gadget Labs tested the Hitachi Woo, a phone with 3D video display. The device is currently available in Japan and 3D phones may be marketed in the U.S. next year. The manufacturers involved use parallax barriers to provide autostereoscopic images, which require no glasses. Would you want one?

Cancer Monitoring Device

Cancer Monitoring Device Described as a "desktop cancer check" by Technology Review, this device is designed to monitor prostate-cancer patients. Utilizing microfluidics technology, it analyzes PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood levels in 15 minutes. Prior to this, it took one or two days to have a laboratory analyze a sample. Now, if patients could monitor themselves at home — that would be great.

Handheld Disease Detector

Handheld Disease Detector An inexpensive handheld device produces a fluorescent glow when a disease is detected. In use, sample trays the size of credit cards are inserted into a reader. Then, when antibodies interact with specific disease markers, a strong red fluorescence appears under UV light. Ultimately, a <$100 home testing device will be able to test for breast cancer, bacteria, and viruses.

Keylocking Studs
Acme Industrial Company

Keylocking Studs Acme Keylocking Studs provide security and "repairability" in applications where you can't use a through-bolt/nut combination. They are superior for use in soft materials such as aluminum or magnesium when extra strength, extended thread life and vibration-resistance are required. From Acme Industrial Company.

Thermal Cutoffs 15 Amp
Thermtrol

Thermal Cutoffs 15 Amp The Thermal DF Series Thermal Cutoffs are single action devices that open when a preset temperature is reached. They are one shot thermal cutoffs for higher current applications. The DF Series is commonly used for motor, appliance, and transformer over-temperature protection. From Thermtrol.

'Outta the Box' Appliance Designs

'Outta the Box' Appliance Designs Best of eight finalists for the Electrolux Design Lab 2010 competition will receive a six-month paid internship plus 5,000 Euros (top prize). Each one of these futuristic appliance concepts is described via a video venue. See if you can guess the three winning industrial design students, who will be selected by a jury of expert designers on September 23.

Teleconferencing with the Boss Bot

Teleconferencing with the Boss Bot This free-wheeling, remote-controlled Anybot zips through a factory or office so that even offsite employees can videoconference with the boss. With built-in guidance and optical-sensing avoidance, this device commands a cool $15,000 (video). This contraption might work equally well at home, interfacing with the kids, neighbors, and mailman. If employees bought one, could they claim it as a non-reimbursed employee expense?

The Ultimate Power Tool Dances Too

The Ultimate Power Tool Dances Too Don't expect this six-limbed robotic tool to become a NASA spinoff like battery-powered drills. Quick-disconnect tool adapters in each limb enable the machine to select numerous items from its "tool belt" to perform drilling, gripping, and other power-tool operations. Each limb can also transform into a general-purpose manipulator, powered by a 1-hp in each wheel ("dance" video).

Electric Screw Driver Ramps Up Performance

Electric Screw Driver Ramps Up Performance Featuring a soft-start mode, a new series of electric torque screwdrivers targets plastics and sensitive applications where the tool needs to ramp up slowly to its operating speed. The driver utilizes a brushless motor design for durability and is ESD certified — measuring <1 ohm at the bit tip — to maximize product life and minimize overall ESD (electrostatic discharge) failures. Torque capacities range from 2.6 to 39 lbf.in.

Cell Phone Allergies?

Cell Phone Allergies? Believe it or not, the slick-looking aluminum and stainless steel alloy in some Apple products may cause allergic reactions (contact dermatitis) for users. Prolonged contact with nickel or chromium in the metal could be one source of the problem. Available solutions include use of hands-free phone features to prevent skin breakouts and topical steroids to treat symptoms. What about gloves?
