Saving Refrigerants for Reuse

Saving Refrigerants for Reuse Wouldn't it be cool if old refrigerant chemicals could be reused? That's precisely what Midwest Refrigerants has accomplished in developing a new process to reclaim refrigerants to their original chemical constituents. The process releases hydrogen fluoride, a key chemical in fluorocarbon refrigerants so it can be reused, and also reclaims hydrogen chloride plus carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide. Previously, old ozone depleting refrigerants had to be incinerated, an expensive proposition at best. The technology has been approved for use in the U.S. and is awaiting final approval from the United Nations Environmental Programme's Technology and Economic Assessment Panel.

Wireless E-bike Charges Your Gadgets

Wireless E-bike Charges Your Gadgets The latest electronic bike minimizes wiring by harnessing 2.4 GHz signals. Its battery, dynamo, and electronics are all hidden inside the front wheel. Both braking and speed are controlled wirelessly with handlebar-mounted levers. Providing a 25-mile range on a five-hour charge, the Shadow eBike utilizes pedaling and regenerative braking to either recharge the battery or charge portable electronic devices via USB.

Cooking with Smarts

Cooking with Smarts In the near future, appliances will communicate wirelessly with a smart meter to conserve power during peak-use times. The cooktop surface of this GE Brillion-enabled electric double oven automatically reduces power by 20% during high-cost hours. Similarly, the double-oven range automatically defaults to the less-energy-intensive upper oven. When they need to, owners can override the energy-saving features.

Liquid Crystals Replace Bifocals

Liquid Crystals Replace Bifocals Unique electronic eyeglasses solve the problems of progressive lens and bifocal spectacles that distort objects beyond arm's length. Thanks to liquid crystals in the bottoms of the lenses, reading power is switched on and off by touching the frame. Current sent from rechargeable batteries in the frame changes molecular orientation of the liquid crystals for magnification. Charges last two to three days (video).

Computerized Eye Implant

Computerized Eye Implant Incorporating what is touted as the "world's first millimeter-scale computer," this eye implant is designed to monitor eye pressure in glaucoma patients. Taking up approximately one cubic millimeter, the device features a microprocessor, memory, pressure sensor, solar cell, thin-film battery, and wireless radio plus antenna. Using a mere 5.3 nanowatts, the implant is charged by sunlight or indoor light.
