Can Future Electronics Be Designed Greener?

Can Future Electronics Be Designed Greener? Electronic devices are some of the most complex energy intensive products made today. So, what has to be done to change the future of gadget design to make them "greener?" Make the designs simple, repairable, and upgradable, says Dominic Muren in a recent Fast Company interview. The biggest mistakes with recyclability of gadgets are rooted in both the designs and the recycling process. Considerable time spent in making devices modular assumes that a near-term low price is best even with a low long-term retained value. Instead, Muren proposes a "skin-skeleton-guts" design framework (video) that preserves product values throughout their life cycle by reusing electronic components in another device.

Celllphones Create 3D Models

Celllphones Create 3D Models Microsoft researchers have developed software that can create 3D models using your cellphone. Basically, you take multiple photos of an object (from different angles), which are immediately transmitted to a cloud server for processing. Then the application downloads a realistic 3D model (video) which you can circumnavigate by sliding your finger over your screen. Now that's a cool app!

Cash for Recycling Your Old Electronics

Cash for Recycling Your Old Electronics Instead of allowing your old electronic devices to collect dust or trashing them into a landfill, you can now get paid to recycle them. To start the process, you just put your used cellphone, MP3 player, ink cartridge, or other device into an ecoATM. The machine then estimates the value of the device — deducting damage — then pays you, if you accept.

Shirt Detects Heart Attacks and More

Shirt Detects Heart Attacks and More Incorporating a 4.5 oz electronic monitor, this performance T-shirt is capable of measuring all kinds of things, including acceleration, breathing rate, heart beats, skin surface temperature, and more. An SD card stores the computerized monitor's data, and thanks to Bluetooth wireless connectivity can transmit the data to a computer or smartphone to be evaluated by a coach or trainer (video).

Laser Melting Produces Surgical Tools

Laser Melting Produces Surgical Tools Imagine a surgical instrument — perhaps even an implant — that could probably be made by a new laser melting process developed by Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials. The process uses a thin laser beam to melt cobalt-chromium steel or titanium metal powder and builds up the required 3D shape from the bottom up. No tools, just a 3D computer model is needed.

Shape-shifting Electronics

Shape-shifting Electronics Next generation personal computing devices could very well provide the functionality of multiple devices in one package — for instance, combining an alarm clock, cellphone, computer, e-reader, gaming system, projector, and more. Just slide the edge of the flexible display in or out. The futuristic IRIS (Inspirational Research for Immersive Space) concept appeared at the CeBit tech fair in Hannover, Germany (video).

Simplify Your Device Charging

Simplify Your Device Charging If you're tired of all the different chargers required for your handheld and mobile electronic devices, not to mention wiring entanglements, you might want to check out one integrated charging solution that can charge up to four devices simultaneously. The MyGrid Charging Pad is compatible with abroad range of mobile devices and is great for traveling — no last minute hunting for multiple chargers.

Future Batteries Feature Fast Charging,
Discharging

Future Batteries Feature Fast Charging, Discharging Practically any battery can take advantage of new nanotechnology to make them charge and discharge significantly faster without sacrificing storage capacity. It's possible thanks to a unique 3D nanostructure for battery cathodes developed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that utilizes 3D self-assembly. In addition to quick-charge electronic devices and power tools, uses include electric vehicles, medical devices, and military applications.

New Water-repellant Technology?

New Water-repellant Technology? Researchers at Vanderbilt University have come up with a film of graphene oxide made via electrophoretic deposition that possesses properties dependent on its surface roughness. A smooth surface causes water to spread out in a thin layer while a rough one causes it to bead up and run off. I suggest waterproof awnings and gazebos, multipurpose tarps, always-clean windows/skylights, rain-proof sportswear, and more.

Are Electronic Gadgets Robbing You of Sleep?

Are Electronic Gadgets Robbing You of Sleep? Addiction to electronic technology appears to be the culprit for many people who don't get enough sleep. A recent sleep poll suggests a direct link between having a hard time sleeping and those who use computers, play video games, watch TV, etc. within an hour of hitting the sack — 63% of 1,508 so reported. Typically, an hour turns into hours.

The Ultimate Portable Scooter

The Ultimate Portable Scooter Debatably, a classic case of necessity being the mother of invention is the design of a solar-electric scooter that fits inside a suitcase. As an engineer working on a Canadian schooner, Terry Hope was told by the captain about three years ago that he couldn't take along an electric scooter — only anything that could fit inside a suitcase. So, he built a solar-electric Kinetic Photovoltaic Vehicle, as Gizmag describes.
