Evidence-based Facility Design

Evidence-based Facility Design Research continues to inform facilities professionals about the potentially beneficial effects of properly designed physical surroundings — e.g., plenty of daylight, views of natural settings — on the healing process. Add to this the facts that hospitals, given their 24/365 operations, are huge consumers of energy and sizable generators of greenhouse gases and waste, the release by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) of its LEED for Healthcare document is noteworthy. While not vastly different from LEED requirements for other types of construction, the healthcare document includes special consideration for healthcare facilities, in the form of modified new construction credits and guidelines for evidence-based design. The USGBC document set is available here.

In the Air, Everywhere

In the Air, Everywhere During normal operation, indoor air quality and infection control are handled by existing systems and protocols. But when there's construction or renovation under way, it's a whole new deal. Team planning, inter-disciplinary, and inter-trade communication are critical, as is implementing proper monitoring and measurement methods. Specialists in occupational health and safety, and environmental compliance offer their advice.

Another Look at Emergency Power

Another Look at Emergency Power The more complex a facility, the more complex its emergency and standby power requirements. How these requirements are addressed is subject to local and national codes and standards, but an overview of the general considerations in planning emergency and standby power systems is always in order. This version from Consulting-Specifying Engineer is particularly detailed and includes some specifics for healthcare facilities.

Robotic Triple Play

Robotic Triple Play Mobile robots that deliver medications from automated pharmacies to hospital nurse stations may not be commonplace, but they are growing in number. Panasonic takes the concept of helper robots for healthcare facilities one step — or maybe three steps — further. The company has introduced three new models in its HOSPI line of healthcare robots, one for helping mobility-limited patients, one that is a combination bed and wheelchair, and one that washes patients' hair.

Six Degrees of Freedom, but Don't Move

Six Degrees of Freedom, but Don't Move Motion control systems within medical devices are often required to have sub-millimeter positioning accuracy and repeatability. For radiation oncology and similar applications, this level of performance is certainly required of the radiation source. But patient positioning is equally critical, and according to the manufacturer, a new robotic system provides six degrees of high-precision patient positioning, with the added benefit of easy integration with existing image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) systems and linear accelerators.

Helping Hospitals Get Social

Helping Hospitals Get Social While healthcare professionals and organizations are still trying to sort out the legal liabilities that electronic health records might carry, some are feeling pressure to make wider use of social media. Moving into this area is also fraught with potential legal and ethical pitfalls. Becker's Hospital Revue recognizes these issues and offers a set of critical steps in the successful development and execution of a social media plan for healthcare organizations.

EMRs, Yes, but First...

EMRs, Yes, but First... EMRs or EHRs get all the attention in most discussions of healthcare IT implementations, but patient records are only one part of the larger data management picture. For organizations looking to automate more of their records keeping and other processes, an industry observer suggests a list of 10 other technologies that should be implemented first, before EMRs. The reasoning, for most of the suggestions, is that the piecemeal approach allows everyone to see how automation affects individual processes, allowing time for adjustments.

Survey: Security Budgets Grow

Survey: Security Budgets Grow With hospitals reporting significant increases in the frequency of attacks and assaults against staff over the past year, it is no surprise that the 2011 Hospital Security Survey conducted by Perception Solutions for Health Facilities Management (HFM) and the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) also reports significant increases in security budgets for responding organizations. Half of respondents said they would be increasing security budgets, and another 35% said they would be keeping security spending at current levels.

Statewide Patient Safety Programs Show Results

Statewide Patient Safety Programs Show Results Patient safety efforts not only save lives and eliminate procedures to correct errors, but when applied in a coordinated way across large groups of facilities can also save millions of dollars. The Michigan Health & Hospital Association is responsible for coordinating three statewide quality and patient safety programs and publishes an annual report on progress in very specific areas, such as ventilator-associated pneumonia and central-line-associated bloodstream infections in ICUs across the state. The details of the programs and the results are impressive and informative.

An IT-driven Colonoscopy?

An IT-driven Colonoscopy? You wouldn't think that a first screening colonoscopy could form the basis for a rant about the current state of healthcare IT, EMRs, EHRs, and their use by clinicians, would you? Well, this commentator did just that, and the sheer volume of criticism this one commonplace procedure generated is pretty amazing. But the points made are valid, even if some of them appear to be based on what may be an unattainable set of ideals.

Diversions . . .
Prescribing Laughter

Prescribing Laughter There is rarely anything funny to be said about a hospital stay or illness, although doctors and nurses will engage in some pretty sick humor away from the sight and hearing of patients. But humor of another sort can actually bring benefits to patients, particularly seniors and children. In a hospital setting, humor can be brought to the patient via a humor channel on the entertainment system, humorous books, or even "clown rounds."
