Social Media and Emergency Preparedness

Social Media and Emergency Preparedness Recent disasters, political uprisings, and potential epidemics have highlighted the useful role of social media in communicating vital information. An argument can be made that properly conducted studies should be done to evaluate the benefits of social media as an adjunct to other methods of disseminating pubic health and disaster response information to affected populations. The authors of an opinion piece in the New England Journal of Medicine point to successes in both planned and unplanned uses of social media in various scenarios and urge further study.

Robots in Central Sterilization

Robots in Central Sterilization It's no longer surprising to find robots in healthcare facilities. After all, they have been doing a variety of tasks in facilities around the world — cleaning floors, filling prescriptions, and assisting with surgery. If you think there aren't any more tasks around a hospital that robots can handle, think again. At New York Presbyterian/The Allen Hospital in New York City, trials are underway of "Penelope CS," a robot that assists in assembling and delivering trays of sterilized surgical instruments to operating rooms more efficiently, and more accurately.

Trendy Designs for Patient Comfort

Trendy Designs for Patient Comfort Is it possible to make a hospital not seem like a hospital? With treatments becoming more sophisticated and technology-dependent, that might seem like a nearly impossible task. But is this even a desirable goal? That depends — on management's point of view and on the depth of its pockets for non-medical items and accoutrements. One hospital in the Netherlands claims a position as a leader in both medical care and patient amenities.

MRI-compatible Pacemaker Trial to Begin

MRI-compatible Pacemaker Trial to Begin Medtronics, Inc. has gotten the green light from the FDA to proceed with a clinical trial of its second-generation cardiac pacemaker designed to be compatible with MRI scanners. Medtronics says the new device, the Advisa DR MRI SureScan pacing system, is not bound by the same restrictions as its previous offering, the RevoSureScan. With the Revo, chest scans could not be performed between certain vertebrae.

CT Scanning for Radiotherapy Planning

CT Scanning for Radiotherapy Planning GE Healthcare has gotten FDA clearance for its Discovery line of CT scanners designed to aid physicians in visualizing conditions requiring radiotherapy and in planning treatment. The company states that the machines meet practitioner demands for diagnostic accuracy, enhanced visualization, complex patient positioning and monitoring, and productive work flow. Among the systems' features is a treatment simulator that aids in accurate localization, identification, beam definition, and verification, prior to any actual treatment.

IT Security Eyes iPads

IT Security Eyes iPads As of October 1 of this year, employees and clinicians at facilities run by the U.S. Veterans Administration will be allowed to use iPhones and iPads to download and view sensitive information. So far, only government-acquired Blackberry devices have been allowed to access V.A. networks. The new rules will allow users of the Apple products to download and view sensitive information, but not store it unless a device meets strict data security requirements. Indications from a pilot program currently underway are that the Apple devices will pass muster.

Are You Connected?

Are You Connected? U.S. News Group has completed and published its annual list of the most connected hospitals in the U.S. Criteria for making the list include having been previously placed on the Best Hospitals list, as well as meeting standards of IT and electronic health records management set by HIMSS Analytics, a division of the nonprofit Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society that analyzes use of health information technology.

EHRs and Patient Safety

EHRs and Patient Safety A group of physicians at University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston have some strong comments, suggestions, and results from actual practice on how electronic health records can make a major contribution to patient safety. Their writings, published in JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and summarized in Science Daily, demonstrate how using EHRs properly can prevent many of the adverse events targeted in the Joint Commission's 2011 National Patient Safety Goals.

When the Hospital is the Patient

When the Hospital is the Patient Hospitals are most often the places where victims of disasters go or are taken to get help. But what happens when the hospital itself is the scene of a disaster or the target of a destructive act? One unfortunate recent example is the monster tornado that killed six at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, MO, earlier this year. This interview of a healthcare security consultant and former security executive for Provena Health in Kankakee, Ill., has some practical advice on disaster preparedness.

To Isolate This Vibration, Start Under the Table
Kellett Enterprises, Inc.

To Isolate This Vibration, Start Under the Table In the world of fluorescence microscopes, even the slightest vibration can negatively affect image quality. That's why when The University of Utah's Biology Department published their parts list for assembly of a super-resolution Biplane FPAM 3D microscope, they recommended Kellett Enterprises' LP-13 Shake Absorber® Vibration Isolation Pads go under the table.

Getting Ahead

Getting Ahead The role of healthcare engineering has evolved to the point that the head of the facility engineering team is now considered a member of the management team with the opportunity to help shape hospital strategy and influence decisions well beyond the traditional confines of the discipline. One reason for this is the accumulation of evidence pointing to a link between physical environment and positive patient outcomes. But it is up to the individual facility leader to raise his or her visibility in the organization in order to realize full potential.

Medical Humor on the Web

Medical Humor on the Web There are lots of places to find funny stories on the web, but some enterprising types have decided to create a site specifically for funny surgery stories. In a fit of creativity, they called the site "Funny Surgery Stories." Membership is free, and members are encouraged to upload their stories for all to read, or watch. The site producers claim that all submissions will be legally cleared, to keep from running afoul of HIPAA or other constraints. So, if you think there's humor in surgery (vitreo-retinal specialists excluded), this is the site for you.
