Pats on the Back for Cutting Back

Pats on the Back for Cutting Back Like virtue, cutting back on energy consumption can be its own reward. Healthcare facilities are huge consumers of energy, far outstripping most commercial buildings of equal square footage. So, a reduction of even 10% can represent a significant savings in raw dollar terms, allowing those dollars to be directed to patient care. Ten percent is the threshold set by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) in determining which facilities would be recognized by the organization for cutting energy consumption. The recognition, earned by 33 facilities in six states, is part of ASHE's Energy Efficiency Commitment (E2C) program, established in support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY STAR® Challenge.

Keeping the Current Flowing

Keeping the Current Flowing One of the many special requirements that separate healthcare facilities from other types is the need for a reliable, secure source of electrical power. When utility power is unavailable, whether because of a natural or manmade disaster or system failure, healthcare facilities must keep life- and safety-critical systems functioning without interruption. With dollars increasingly scarce, choices in creating or upgrading an emergency power system must take into account budget as well as technical considerations. This piece at hfmmagazine.com uses case studies to illustrate a sensible approach to the issues.

Staying Cool — or Warm — in an Emergency

Staying Cool -- or Warm -- in an Emergency California is known for, among other things, a variety of climates existing within the state all at the same time. But regardless of the local climate, a loss of HVAC systems can be devastating to patient comfort and safety. In recognition of this, the California Hospital Association has developed an emergency preparedness guide specifically for the rare instance when all HVAC capabilities are inoperative. Although developed for California facilities, the methodology is universally applicable.

New CT Scanner for the Lower Extremities

New CT Scanner for the Lower Extremities Device manufacturer CurveBeam has received FDA approval for its new PedCAT CT scanner designed for imaging patients' feet and ankles. Using a cone-shaped X-ray beam — heretofore used primarily in dental and ENT imaging — the device can image lower extremities in both weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing configurations. The system delivers 3D volumetric information, which can be displayed as a 3D image or as conventional CT plane images.

Device Compatibility to Boost Patient Safety

Device Compatibility to Boost Patient Safety Medical devices that generate and transmit patient data in digital format or operate on digital commands are proliferating at rates that have outstripped the ability of regulatory regimes to keep up. Beyond FDA approval for specific devices, there is little regulatory coverage of, for example, mobile devices used by individual clinicians. Concerns about this state of affairs and its impact on patient safety have given rise to calls for regulation from many quarters.

How to Avoid OCR/HIPAA Audit Woes

How to Avoid OCR/HIPAA Audit Woes An Office of Civil Rights (OCR) HIPAA audit can be considered an opportunity to get a free, third-party assessment. Or, the prospect of being audited or investigated can be the cause of organizational panic. The response depends on an organization's degree of compliance and the state of its progress in establishing processes and procedures to achieve compliance down the road. In this piece at healthcareitnews.com, experts discuss the key points in preparing for an audit and how to score well.

mHealth Reaches Out and Touches Patients

mHealth Reaches Out and Touches Patients Although implementation can add burdens to a healthcare organization's IT infrastructure, a mobile health monitoring system can improve patient outcomes by making compliance with doctor's instructions simpler. In an interview with Healthcare Informatics, a medical adviser to a leading business consulting company explains the opportunities and challenges in expanding the scope of mobile health monitoring via 4G networks.

Infection Control Agenda Spreads to ASCs

Infection Control Agenda Spreads to ASCs Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) are no less likely than larger facilities to be sources of facility-acquired infections. The main difference so far has been a lack of emphasis by government agencies on gathering infection rate and control statistics for the ASC class of facility. Now, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has developed a national action plan to address infection control issues in smaller facilities. The plan has been dubbed a "roadmap to elimination."

Crying "Wolf" on the Medical Floor

Crying 'Wolf' on the Medical Floor The children's story about the boy who cried wolf carries some good object lessons for youngsters. But when the scenario is translated to a medical floor or ICU, and the "wolf" cry comes from medical alarms, the results — "alarm fatigue" among staff — can seriously compromise patient safety and ultimate outcomes. A group of stakeholder organizations convened a summit focusing on alarm-related issues, and the report from the summit's various sessions has been compiled and is available for download.
