Conflicting Codes Can Confuse

Conflicting Codes Can Confuse We all hope that the physicians treating us are making their decisions using the best available science-based information. The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) believes a science-based approach should also be used in developing fire prevention and other codes for healthcare facilities. Unfortunately, healthcare facilities are subject to several levels of codes, and these are often in conflict. Taking the initiative, ASHE partnered with an engineering firm to do research that will inform code-developing organizations and, it is hoped, result in a more rational, conflict-free set of codes that ensure patient and staff safety.

ProSim Vital Signs Simulators are Fast Five minute PMs. Sixty-second quick-checks. Fifteen-second SpO2 testing.

In his book, Medical Device Quality Assurance, J. Tobey Clark, of the University of Vermont estimated time to complete an average patient monitor PM at 50 minutes. We developed a patient simulator that could do it in five minutes.

ASTM Technical and Professional Training ASTM training courses often count toward Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) Professional Development Hour (PDH) requirements.

ASTM is an approved sponsor of PDH activities in some states.

When to Shut Down the Electrical System

When to Shut Down the Electrical System There are two main categories of reasons to shut down a healthcare facility's electrical system. One is when it is an absolute requirement during construction or renovation. The other is for maintenance — either of the overall electrical system or to systems or equipment connected to it. In an operating facility, shutting down electrical service can impact patient safety, so the questions of when, how, and how much of the electrical infrastructure to shut down are critical.

What, Exactly is an Essential Electrical
System?

What, Exactly is an Essential Electrical System? It may or may not matter to facilities professionals in other countries, but our friends in Canada believe "essential" is an important distinction when it comes to electrical systems. In fact, the Canadian electrical code and CSA standard Z32 each have a detailed definition, along with equally precise definitions of various classes of healthcare facilities. This article on the Web site of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) explains the importance of "essential."

32-slice CT System Cleared for U.S.

32-slice CT System Cleared for U.S. Capable of producing up to 28 images per second, the Aquilion RXL Edition helical CT scanner has received final clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The 32-slice system comes bundled with software that keeps the operator apprised of the radiation dose being delivered to the patient, with the aim of limiting exposure to only what is clinically necessary.

Combining PET and MRI to Cut Radiation
Exposure

Combining PET and MRI to Cut Radiation Exposure Imaging schemes combining positron-emission tomography (PET) and CT are routinely used in diagnostic scans for cancer. The downside is the significant amount of ionizing radiation absorbed by the patient's body. Particle physicists at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) have found that combining PET and MRI results in more useful clinical imaging, while cutting the amount of radiation beamed into the patient by as much as half.

Texting Pediatric Surgery Updates

Texting Pediatric Surgery Updates There is nothing more anxiety-producing for a parent than having a child undergo an invasive surgical procedure. After piloting the program for six months, Children's National Medical Center has fully implemented MyCareText. It is an SMS messaging system designed to provide parents with near-real-time updates on their child's condition and the progress of the surgery, while the procedure is still ongoing. The aim is to enhance parents' experience by relieving some of the anxiety.

How Meaningful is Meaningful Use?

How Meaningful is Meaningful Use? A practicing diagnostic radiologist shares his views on the nexus of radiology and image archiving, meaningful use, and consumer-driven healthcare. Addressing a meeting hosted by Merge Healthcare, Dr. Eliot Siegel commented on the current state of imaging informatics and EMR systems, including some humorous complaints about the user interfaces he has encountered.

The Built Environment and Safety

The Built Environment and Safety The non-profit Center for Health Design has done a survey of 55 empirical research studies on the relationship between the design of the built environment and resident safety outcomes in long-term care facilities. The survey results have been compiled and are available on a complementary basis from the CHD. The report assigns adverse outcomes to one of six categories, and identifies five environmental factors that directly affect outcomes.

"Crystal Ball" Can Predict Patient Falls

Engineering researchers at Texas Tech have developed a sensor system that can predict a patient's likelihood of falling. The first step is to baseline a patient's posture and gait, and then sense any significant deviations from the baseline patterns. The sensor pack is small enough to be worn on a belt, but other placement options are being explored.

Sterilizing in Hospitals
Managing EHRs

Sterilizing in Hospitals The AAMI ST79 recommended practice document, available now from IHS, provides guidelines for decontamination and steam sterilization processing in hospitals and other health care facilities — nursing homes, extended-care facilities, free-standing surgical centers, clinics, and medical and dental offices.

For more information on IHS standards, visit us here.

Managing EHRs The ISO 18308 International Standard, available now from IHS, defines requirements for a system that manages electronic health records (EHRs). The requirements are formulated to ensure that EHRs are faithful to the needs of healthcare delivery, are clinically valid and reliable, are ethically sound, meet prevailing legal requirements, support good clinical practice, and facilitate data analysis for a multitude of purposes.
