Major Growth Seen in Sol-gel Products

Major Growth Seen in Sol-gel Products The global market for sol-gel products is expected to surpass the $2 billion mark in the next five years, with a compound annual growth rate of 10.1% in the U.S. alone, according to Massachusetts-based BCC Research. The U.S. has been a world leader in the technology, which uses a low-temperature process for making advanced materials, notably ceramics and glass, by converting a solution from a liquid to a solid gel phase. One of the largest application areas is in coatings and thin films used in electronic and optical components and devices.

Textiles — Colour Measurement and Dye Baths
Lovibond® Tintometer®
Enco Wet/Dry Grinder
Enco

Textiles — Colour Measurement and Dye Baths Lovibond Tintometer's colour measurement solutions are used for many different materials. In textiles it is vital to check dye bath strengths, assuring color continuity within batches and to measure waste water colour before/after treatment. Metamerism is another reason for colour measurement, as dyes of different compositions can create mismatches under varied lighting conditions.

Enco Wet/Dry Grinder Dual-purpose machining with a 10 in. wet wheel in fine grit, for finishing fine edge tools, and a 5 in. dry wheel for coarse grinding from Enco. The water bath of the large wheel allows for the sharpening of cutting tools without ruining tempered steel. Learn more.

Ceramic Vibes Give Phone Clear Audio

Ceramic Vibes Give Phone Clear Audio For those who use a smartphone for voice conversations, an advanced ceramic technology will make listening all the clearer. The phone is the first in the world to transmit sound through a special ceramic unit that passes vibrations directly from the phone through the user's tissue and bone. The technology provides sharp, clear audio even if the handset is used in a supermarket or ballpark where there's loud ambient noise.

Printing Tiles Twice as Fast

Printing Tiles Twice as Fast Printing on ceramic tile has now gotten twice as fast. With the just-released Xaar 1001 GS12 printhead, it's now possible for tile manufacturers to impart deep, bold colors at double the speed of the previous GS6 model. The technology allows for remarkable, detailed replication of natural materials, even on tiles viewed at close range, such as bathroom tiles, at speeds not previously possible.

Composites Get Boost from S Fiber

Composites Get Boost from S Fiber Faster growth in composite materials may be on the horizon if wider applications can be found for a promising new polypropylene fiber that debuted just this year. Innegra S by U.S.-based Innegra Technologies is believed to be the lightest structural fiber available today. It's used to impart superior toughness to glass, carbon, and aramid composites at a lower weight and cost than other high-performance fibers. UK-based technical textiles maker Sigmaxtex recently announced a venture with Innegra to further develop applications for the fiber.

Converting PE into Carbon Fiber

Converting PE into Carbon Fiber Imagine being able to convert a cheap material used to make plastic bags into high-performance, high-dollar carbon fiber. Using a combination of multi-component fiber spinning and a sulfonation technique, researchers made polyethylene-based fibers with a customized surface contour and filament diameter down to the submicron scale. Their process also allows the fiber's porosity to be fine-tuned, making the material potentially useful for filtration, catalysis, and electrochemical energy harvesting.

New Thickness Capabilities for Containers

Precitec, Inc.
Lubricant for Diamond Films Lapping and Polishing
Saint-Gobain Surface Conditioning Group

New Thickness Capabilities for Containers Inline thickness measurement tools have emerged for non-round ware. With Precitec's recently developed optical probes, nearly all types of materials and containers can be measured. Advances in light source technology have also opened up the doors for darker ware. Monitoring and controlling the process with CHRocodile saves production time and money.

Lubricant for Diamond Films Lapping and Polishing Saint-Gobain's AmberLube™ 87 is a ready to use, water based diamond lapping lubricant used with a diamond lapping film for use on crystalline, ceramic, and metallic materials. It is well-suited to the polishing of magnetic recording heads where a multiplicity of metals and ceramics comprise the read and write elements of the head.

Giving Bikers a Better Grip

Giving Bikers a Better Grip Whether you ride a Harley or a Schwinn, you'll get a better grip on your bike with a new glove designed with palms made from super high-strength nanofibers. The gloves, made by sports apparel maker Goldwin Inc. of Japan, use Teijin Fiber Ltd.'s Nanofront, a polyester fiber that's about 7,500x smaller than the cross section of a human hair. The super strong fiber offers excellent slip resistance, a soft, comfortable texture, and high moisture absorbency, features bike riders of all types will appreciate.

Coating Alternative to Carbon Nanofiber

Coating Alternative to Carbon Nanofiber Because of their performance attributes across a variety of material platforms, carbon nanotubes are showing up in just about everything. The downside in most applications is the cost. Now, a U.S. company has developed a technology called nickel chemical vapor deposition, or CVD, which is used as a coating on substrates, including woven or nonwoven fabrics, to impart the performance of carbon nanofibers at a fraction of the cost. CVD-coated nonwovens are said to be lighter, thinner, and more conductive than nonwovens made with conventional conductive fibers.

Windows of Opportunity

Windows of Opportunity Remember those long, boring drives you spent in the back seat of the family car as your parents drove to your summer vacation destination? Well, for the next generation of kids, or any backseat passenger, the experience will be anything but boring. General Motors' Windows of Opportunity project gives the term "windows apps" a whole new meaning. Basically, the concept seeks to transform the passenger side windows into educational and entertainment screens that provide passengers with an augmented reality experience, as this video demonstrates.

Ecoglass Product Lineup Expands

Ecoglass Product Lineup Expands One of the world's largest window glass producers is expanding its lineup of high thermal insulation Low-E glass offerings this summer. Asahi Glass Co. Ltd. will beef up its Sunbalance series of commercial and residential window glass with four new additions, starting this month. The new products offer improved performance in heat insulating and shielding, greater energy savings, and brighter indoor interiors with glass that enables higher transmission of visible light.
