A new microbial fuel cell not only creates energy during wastewater treatment, it vastly reduces the amount of sludge produced. Instead of using electricity to push air into the water, reports Scientific American, the technology uses a permeable filter that allows air in but doesn't let liquid out. A polyethylene plastic membrane surrounds the fuel cell chamber into which wastewater flows. The treatment is said to be ideal for wastewater high in organic material, such as wastewater from agriculture and food processing.

This article describes methods being used by several major manufacturers to reduce their water consumption. The common denominator is treating and reusing wastewater. Groundbreaking research by University of Brighton scientists heralds a paradigm shift in the understanding of how silver can be used to clean mercury-contaminated water. It's generally accepted that when silver is reduced to nano-sized particles, it loses its effectiveness in absorbing mercury. However, the university researchers discovered just the opposite. By splitting nanoparticles of silver below 35 nm in diameter, they found that this allowed almost twice as much mercury to be removed.

The capacity of iron- and palladium-based materials to degrade trichloroethene was the focus of a side-by-side comparison at Rice University. Pd catalyst was the clear winner, requiring less than 15 minutes to break down 90% of the common groundwater pollutant. In comparison, the Fe forms tested required 25 hours to more than 10 days.

An effective water treatment system can significantly increase the life and efficiency of your boilers by removing dissolved metals and gases that corrode boiler surfaces. NSF P231 establishes minimum requirements for health and sanitation characteristics of microbiological water purifiers. In particular, the standard describes systems that use chemical, mechanical, and/or physical technologies to filter and treat waters of unknown microbiological quality, but that are presumed to be potable.

An ISO standard describes test methods for fully submersible wastewater mixers. The mixer comprises a drive unit, axial flow type impeller, and optional parts supporting basic functions. The media in which the mixer is submerged includes suspensions and dispersions, plus non-Newtonian liquids.
