Solar Cells with a Certain Aesthetic

A thin hybrid silicon/organic solar cell developed at University of Michigan goes beyond basic black — these transparent devices are fabricated in various colors to be decorative energy generators. Different thicknesses of amorphous Si yield different colors: 6 nm thick for blue, 11 nm for green, and 31 nm for red. The Si layer is encased between semi-transparent electrodes in an arrangement that transmits certain light wavelengths. A cell resembling an American flag posted a 2% efficiency, underscoring the concession between visual appeal and utility. But the opportunity to widen the scope of PV placement through color could offset efficiency concerns.

Gizmag notes the device provides 8 hours at 120 lumens after 5-8 hours of sunlight exposure. The South African inventor expects to offer the lamp-in-a-bottle for US$13.

This Modification is More Than Window Dressing At the 2014 Solar Decathlon this summer in France, the Delft University of Technology team will demonstrate a novel solar technology retrofit for the typical Dutch terraced house. A solar skin built around the house incorporates photovoltaics to generate energy and add insulation. The design preserves traditional architectural elements while rendering the house carbon-neutral.
