More height equals more wind, so it was just a matter of time before someone married a turbine to a blimp. A Massachusetts company recently completed testing of a 35 ft airborne wind turbine (AWT) at an altitude of 350 ft. Constructed in a sail-making loft, the donut-shaped blimp surrounds a Southwest Skystream turbine, using fins and guy wires to adjust direction and output. The ultimate goal is harnessing strong and steady winds found above 1,000 ft.

International and U.S. Standards for Wind Turbines American National Standards Institute, Inc.
Whether you are designing turbines, gears, testing performance, integrating into smart grid, or ensuring workplace safety — ANSI has the standards you need.
Eccentric Gearbox Research
Although turbine gearboxes represent only about 15% of total cost, their share of maintenance and repair costs is often far higher. Other than direct-drive generators, there have been few improvements over traditional planetary designs. A new design from Norway may change that. Using an eccentric gear configuration, the gearbox promises extended life, fewer moving parts, and a 20:1 final ratio.

DC Compressor Suitable for Wind Turbine Braking
Thomas Division — Gardner Denver
The 3D19 Series oil-less, WOB-L® Piston DC compressor from Thomas is designed for air-braking and other applications that require maximum intermittent pressure up to 120 psi (8.3 bar). The lightweight (6.41 lbs/2.9 kg), quiet, and durable 3D19 comes with a dryer/solenoid and is available with 12 V or 24 V DC motor.
Automated Blade Builds
Turbine blade manufacturers face many challenges: complex shape, size, stress engineering, resistance to environmental degradation, and cost control. So it's no wonder that many are looking at automation as key to increasing competitiveness. Wind Systems Magazine describes how one manufacturer teamed with the U.S. Department of Energy and an automation systems design firm to build 33 m fiberglass composite blades completely by machine. The results look promising.
HAWE Hydraulics Customizes with All the Right Solutions HAWE North America Inc.
The Wind Power Industry appreciates HAWE's customized power packs. For applications with higher oil-flow rates such as hydraulic pitch control, our custom power packs are supplied ready for plug-and-play installation. Reliable components and a modular design provide the flexibility to build the right system with the added bonus of easy maintenance.
Eliminate Hydraulic Accumulator Maintenance Costs Senior Aerospace Metal Bellows
Achieve improved wind turbine availability and lower life cycle costs with Senior Aerospace metal bellows maintenance free hydraulic accumulators. All welded metal construction hermetically seals gas charge resulting in zero leakage and superior performance compared with conventional accumulators.
Exceptional Quality. Exceptional Performance
At Parkline quality starts with heavy-gauge steel wall and roof systems protected with a G90 continuous hot-dip zinc coating, but it doesn't stop there. Their dedication to superior quality extends from their raw materials to the machinery they use to custom manufacture their building and components.
Remote Control Maintenance
Maintaining the reliability of offshore wind turbines requires attention to details that are not always apparent from a distance. The Windsense project adapts best practices from the maritime and oil and gas industries to turbine maintenance. Replacing in-person inspections is not a panacea, but the system can quickly warn of potential failures. The sensor system will also minimize downtime by reducing turbine speed just prior to maintenance visits.
AWEA Teams with Environmentalists
The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has joined forces with 40 wind-related manufacturers to support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's wind energy guidelines. This is one of many efforts the industry is going through to lobby Congress to renew the production tax credit for wind energy producers. Although bipartisan Congressional support is building, the industry is also working to gain the support of environmental groups, according to Renewable Energy World.
Tower Tames Transport Tasks
Tunnels, narrow roads, and low-hanging wires are the bane of tower transporters worldwide. Renewables International describes a new tower design that promises to simplify logistics and provide an alternative to concrete tower construction. Developed for onshore applications, the steel towers are screwed together from preassembled tubular segments. No welding is required, and rubber weather stripping prevents rain from entering the towers.
Curious about the latest research in tower foundations? Main(e) International Consulting recently surveyed the industry for the latest in floating, semi-submersible, and tension leg platforms. The Japanese are leading the charge, spurred on by the switch from nuclear to traditional and renewable sources. European interest in floating foundations is also increasing; notable examples include the Windfloat and Vertiwind projects.
Atlantic Offshore Grid Gains Momentum
The U.S. East Coast is an excellent wind power resource bordering the largest concentrated market in the world. The problem has always been distributing power through an older, expansion-resistant grid. The Atlantic Wind Connection, an offshore transmission system underwritten by Google and several energy firms, promises to overcome the distribution bottleneck. North American Windpower looks at the regulatory and environmental hurdles still facing the project.
