More height equals more wind, so it was just a matter of time before someone married a turbine to a blimp. A Massachusetts company recently completed testing of a 35 ft airborne wind turbine (AWT) at an altitude of 350 ft. Constructed in a sail-making loft, the donut-shaped blimp surrounds a Southwest Skystream turbine, using fins and guy wires to adjust direction and output. The ultimate goal is harnessing strong and steady winds found above 1,000 ft.

Other than direct-drive generators, there have been few improvements over traditional planetary designs. A new design from Norway may change that. Using an eccentric gear configuration, the gearbox promises extended life, fewer moving parts, and a 20:1 final ratio.

Renewables International describes a new tower design that promises to simplify logistics and provide an alternative to concrete tower construction. Developed for onshore applications, the steel towers are screwed together from preassembled tubular segments. No welding is required, and rubber weather stripping prevents rain from entering the towers.
