Computers That Think Like Humans
Computers That Think Like Humans

Top researchers contend they have developed a technology that could allow society to achieve its loftiest goals — things like penetrating space and saving the planet from climate catastrophe. They are talking about cognitive computing, a paradigm that harnesses the power of artificial intelligence, enabling computers to learn the way humans do. The scientists foresee "cognitive assistants" interacting with people in a wide range of endeavors, enabling both man and machine to become more intelligent. Information Age examines the technology, explains how it must be further developed, and provides examples of applications in which the technology is used today.

Micro-miniature and Close Tolerance O-Rings and Seals
Micro-miniature and Close Tolerance
O-Rings and Seals
Precision Associates Incorporated

The drive for smaller and lighter equipment has compelled the need for smaller, more precise rubber seals. Precision Associates' proprietary molding process, state-of-the-art deflashing equipment, and in-house tooling facility allow us to accurately produce quality molded O-rings and seals smaller than 0.10 in. The same technology used for micro-miniature products can be applied to manufacturing products with tighter tolerances than the AS568 standard. We are the Home of the World's Smallest O-ring!

A Wisp of a Keyboard

A Wisp of a Keyboard A UK-based startup has developed an ultra-thin printed QWERTY keyboard, enabled by capacitive touch technology. The keyboard's embedded processor supports input processing and provides Bluetooth connectivity. To produce the prototype, the company used conductive ink, regular photo paper, and standard print machines. This approach clears the way for low-cost, high-volume production when a commercial model is brought to market.

Taking the Heat off Next-generation Computing

Taking the Heat off Next-generation Computing
Overheating remains a major obstacle to achieving faster processing speeds, but researchers believe they can use carbon nanotubes' high thermal conductivity to carry excess heat away from microchips. The challenge is to reduce the thermal resistance between the nanotubes and the metal contact points on the microchip. Their solution: use organic molecules to create a bridge between the two materials, greatly improving heat transfer.

Invisible Electronics

Invisible Electronics Researchers have developed electronic components flexible and small enough to wrap around a single hair. The components come in the form of an ultra-thin parylene polymer membrane that can adhere to a wide variety of surfaces. The developers hope to weave the membrane into textiles to make smart objects or to apply it to skin to monitor body functions.

A Super Speaker

A Super Speaker
At first blush, Blueshift's Helium audio speaker stands out because it is powered by a supercapacitor, which enables it to recharge in minutes, not hours, and provide 6 hrs of operation. This, however, is just the first in a long list of features aimed at optimizing efficiency. Digital Trends looks at the holistic design approach and explains how efficiency translates into superior sound.

Mending a Broken Heart

Mending a Broken Heart Researchers working on the cutting edge of material science and electronics have made bio-monitoring a contact sport. The scientists have developed a way of fabricating biointegrated electronics, flexible systems that interface directly with the body. These devices can perform a variety of functions — from monitoring hydration levels to treating heart disease — and then upload the data to a smartphone.

Circumventing Moore's Law

Circumventing Moore's Law
Researchers may have found a way around the limitations of atomic scale that threaten Moore's law, substituting nanowires for traditional transistors. The fabrication process uses silicon-coated nanowires with a germanium core, laid in a parallel pattern on a silicon dioxide substrate. While this approach will not replace large-scale CPU transistors, it offers a way to make tiny, fast, low-power processors for applications like robotics and biosensors.

Getting a Charge out of Micro Windmills

Getting a Charge out of Micro Windmills Measuring 1.8 mm at their widest point, micro windmills offer a potential solution for recharging portable electronic devices. Mount an array of the turbines on a sleeve encasing the device, and the force of the air moving past the blades as the device is used generates enough energy to recharge the battery in minutes. The researchers fabricated the mechanical structures using planar multilayer electroplating techniques.
