Shedding Light on Communications
Shedding Light on Communications

Researchers are developing a technology called Li-Fi, or light fidelity, that uses visible light to communicate. In these systems, LEDs transmit binary code by changing their on/off state, and photodetectors register the ones and zeros. The technology's developers hope to use existing light sources like TVs and streetlights to serve as Li-Fi hotspots and expand the range of the networks. The amazing aspect of this technology is its scale. Researchers are developing LEDs 1,000x smaller than their predecessors that flicker 1,000x faster, making it possible to transmit tremendous volumes of data in a split second.

This Pen Makes You a Better Writer

This Pen Makes You a Better Writer LiveScribe's digital pen tells you when you misspell a word, use bad grammar, or exhibit poor penmanship. The device gets its smarts from a Linux-based processor, motion and pressure sensors, and handwriting recognition software. Because the sensors recognize writing on paper and in the air, you can use the pen to write text messages. A network module will soon give the pen Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Magic of Liquid Keys

The Magic of Liquid Keys
Tired of typing mistakes that occur when fat fingers meet flat touchscreen keyboards? Consider Tactus Technology's tactile keyboard. The technology uses fluid-filled channels to make physical keys rise up from the touchscreen when you need to type and disappear when you don't. The keyboard's developers promise adjustable pressure, so the keys can be soft or firm to meet personal preferences.

An Operating System for All Seasons

An Operating System for All Seasons The creators of Linux-based Ubuntu are hoping to tailor their operating system so that it runs on smartphones, tablets, laptops, and TVs equally well. Success requires software flexible enough to meet the demands of each device and easy for application developers to work with. Ubuntu's makers have already demonstrated smartphone and tablet versions of their software.

An Ingenious Combination

An Ingenious Combination
The newest dazzling hybrid technology has nothing to do with electric vehicles. Instead, it addresses two key needs of mobile devices: reducing power consumption and simplifying input. Silicon and Semiconductor looks at Apple's patented integrated touch sensor and solar assembly and explains the benefits of one component serving two purposes in an application where space is at a premium.

Magnetic Transistors are Attractive

Magnetic Transistors are Attractive Using magnetism to control the flow of electrons across an indium antimonide bridge, researchers have created a logic gate that functions without voltage. These transistors promise to reduce energy consumption. Even more important, they could enable reconfigurable circuitry. For example, this flexibility could allow a user to reprogram a smartphone's microcircuits to process video and then switch back to take a phone call.

The Sound of Flexibility

The Sound of Flexibility
Researchers have developed an ultra-thin film that acts as a speaker. To create a material flexible enough to take a variety of forms but not absorb the vibrations that produce sound, the scientists combined a viscoelastic polymer, piezoelectric ceramics, electrodes, and a protective outer layer. When a voltage is applied to the film, the ceramics vibrate and the polymer acts as a diaphragm.

Mass Producing Microsupercapacitors

Mass Producing Microsupercapacitors Traditional microsupercapacitor fabrication relies on costly, labor-intensive lithographic techniques that limit commercial application. Recent R&D efforts, however, have developed a technique that uses a DVD burner to produce microscale graphene-based supercapacitors quickly and inexpensively. These devices charge 100 to 1,000x faster than conventional batteries, and the placement of the electrodes in the new design increases charge capacity and rate capability.
