GlobalSpec: DirectU2 Electronic Device Design Special Edition
Electronic Device Design
Super Material for Super Electronics
Super Material for Super Electronics

Stronger than steel, more conductive than any other material, and transparent, scientists believe graphene — a layer of graphite one atom thick — could enable electronics makers to build revolutionary mobile devices or superfast computers. A sheet of this material stacked to the thickness of cellophane promises to carry large electrical currents, allowing manufacturers to miniaturize transistors well beyond the limits of silicon. Ultra-sensitive and flexible, graphene could also make it possible to create superior touchscreens and detectors capable of diagnosing diseases much sooner than existing testing devices. Leading consumer electronics makers anticipate that graphene-based devices will be available within five years.

Scavenging Energy from the Ether

Scavenging Energy from the Ether Using an innovative ultra-wideband antenna, researchers at Georgia Tech have developed a way of scavenging enough ambient electromagnetic energy to power small electronic devices, such as microprocessors, communications chips, and wireless sensors. The scientists use ink-jet printers, nanoparticle ink, and polymer substrates to create the antenna. This combination increases the antenna's power-gathering capacity by supporting multiband systems, which function in the 15-60 GHz range. Energy sources include mobile networks, radio and TV transmitters, radar, and satellite communications.

Making Open-source Hardware a Reality

Making Open-source Hardware a Reality CERN's Open Hardware Repository has published the Open Hardware License 1.1, a move to create an open-development environment for the electronic design community that would facilitate feedback among peers, better collaboration, and design reuse. The legal framework governs the use, copying, modification, and distribution of hardware design documentation. In this case, documentation includes circuit or circuit-board schematics, mechanical drawings, and descriptive texts. A new business model could emerge from the initiative, allowing companies to commercialize, manufacture, and distribute products based on collaborative design efforts.

Can Mobile Memory Meet Performance Demands?

Can Mobile Memory Meet Performance Demands? As the tablet and smartphone markets grow, so do demands on mobile memory. Increasingly, consumers call for power management features such as low-active mode, standby power, and fast power-state transitions to increase battery life. Smaller form factors are a constant challenge. And performance-defining functionality, such as high bandwidth, multiple memory channels for high throughput, and support for multicore processors are necessary differentiators. Ongoing standards development, particularly in the JEDEC committees, is helping advance innovative technologies.

Face Recognition for Mobiles

Face Recognition for Mobiles What happens when you add face recognition and tracking technology to portable devices? You may find out soon. Apple appears to be adding the capability to the upcoming iOS5 mobile operating system. By giving third-party software developers access to face-recognition technology, smart video apps could use facial cues to trigger digital image stabilization. Games could use face positions and movement as interactive inputs. And designers could use the technology for automatic log-ins or user authentication in wave-and-pay systems.

The Hand Becomes the Interface

The Hand Becomes the Interface You don't need a mouse or digital stylus to input data. You don't need a physical reference point to interact with your computer, as you would with gesture technology or traditional touchscreens. With the aid of infrared sensing technology, however, the skin on the back of your hand can become your new computing interface. The technology, unfortunately, is not yet ready for prime time. Direct sunlight confuses the sensor, and the prototype doesn't have a multitouch vocabulary that includes the pinching and rotating gestures.

Managing Power from the Top Down

Managing Power from the Top Down There's more than one way to use programmable logic technology in power management subsystems. A new methodology shift advocates a top-down approach that begins by reviewing the system's key power requirements. Rather than building the subsystem from the bottom up by selecting individual components, consider using an integrated power management device that delivers the functionality the system requires in one package. This approach promises to eliminate redundancy, reduce cost per function, ensure reliability, and provide the flexibility necessary to accommodate modifications and upgrades.

The Application of Ultra-Low-Power RF

The Application of Ultra-Low-Power RF Ultra-low-power (ULP) RF is carving out a new class of applications. Designers are adding this connectivity to portable electronic products that require tiny transceivers and power sources to send rapid bursts of small quantities of data at infrequent intervals. ULP technology enables communications among a wide variety of devices — from cell phones to fitness sensors — either directly or as part of a network. The technology requires less power than low-power radios (e.g., Bluetooth), expanding opportunities to add wireless links to even the most compact devices.
