Untangling Software Snags
Untangling Software Snags

With a U.S. medical device market of over $95 billion hungry for new, feature-rich products, software has become a key product differentiator and drives most of the desired features. According to some observers, the software content of a typical class of devices doubles about every two years. Because the software embedded in medical devices must pass regulatory muster for safety, software quality control becomes a critical function for device developers. Next-generation automated software quality testing products may be the answer.

New Arduino Due at Mouser
New Arduino Due at Mouser

Mouser Electronics, Inc.

The Arduino Due is a microcontroller board based on the Atmel SAM3X8E ARM® Cortex™-M3 MCU. It is the first Arduino board based on a 32-bit ARM core microcontroller. The Due is compatible with all Arduino shields that work at 3.3V and are compliant with the 1.0 Arduino pinout. Visit Mouser.com.

Low-power Microcontrollers with RC ADC Converters
Low-power Microcontrollers with RC ADC Converters
ROHM Semiconductor, USA LLC

The newest members to the ML610Q4xx series low-power microcontrollers from LAPIS Semiconductor — a ROHM Group Company — will give designers even more choices when creating products that provide comprehensive control over the operation of battery-powered devices used for the measurement of temperature, humidity, and carbon monoxide.

Managing the BYOD Groundswell

Managing the BYOD Groundswell Industrial computing networks are susceptible to security problems, and employees and others bringing personal devices — smartphones, tablets, laptops — into the environment gives IT and factory floor automation managers fits. Whether a company requires mobile device management solutions to be loaded on employee-owned devices, or the company purchases devices for employees to use, the costs are significant. Also, portable device operating systems aren't really up to the task of keeping personal and work-related tasks well separated. Enter the idea of separate virtualized "personae" residing on the same operating system.

Look Deep into Your RTOS

Look Deep into Your RTOS
While many developers shy away from using an RTOS for their embedded projects, three visualization tools might help overcome their objections. One of the issues that arises in working with an RTOS is the difficulty in "seeing" what's going on with various calls. With one new visualization tool, Tracealyzer, offered by Percepio, developers can "see" down to the kernel-call level, and with promised subsequent releases, down to the function-call level. Seeing is not only believing, but makes for fewer development headaches.

1000-1400 Temperature Data Logger
1000-1400 Temperature Data Logger
Vaisala

Vaisala Veriteq VL-1000/1400 temperature data loggers are designed for monitoring, alarming, and recording environmental conditions. They are for use in DA/GxP-regulated environments like GxP storage and warehousing, research and development labs, drug and biological processing areas, and cold chain applications including ultra-low freezers, fridges, and cold rooms.

Low-resistance, High-current RTP Device
Low-resistance, High-current RTP Device
TE Connectivity

The RTP200R060SA device is the latest in the series of Reflowable Thermal Protection(RTP) devices that offer a convenient, cost-effective alternative to typical thermal fuses. RTP devices help protect against thermal-runaway damage caused by MOSFETS, capacitors, ICs, resistors, and other power components that can crack and fail. From TE Connectivity.

Thanks for the Extra Memories

Thanks for the Extra Memories Extra memory is always a welcome addition when designing around a microcontroller that is in a system requiring wireless connectivity. With that in mind, Texas Instruments has introduced a new family of microcontrollers, the MSP430F66xx series, that carries embedded 512K Flash and 64K RAM. This amount of memory allows the MCUs to handle various wireless protocols with ease. The applications targeted by the family include analog and digital sensor systems, digital motor controls, digital timers, and handheld test and measurement devices.

Hitting the Beach

Hitting the Beach
Although armed drones and bomb-defusing robots get a lot coverage in the technical and general media, some war fighting will still have to be done the old-fashioned way, with boots on the ground, or, more specifically, boots on the beach via an amphibious landing. But that doesn't mean that the landing craft themselves have to be old-fashioned. In recognition of this, the U.S. Navy has awarded a contract to Aitech for single-board computers and other embedded computing gear to carry out command, control, communications, computing, and navigation (C4N) functions on the new Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC).

Developing M2M Apps for Medical Devices

Developing M2M Apps for Medical Devices One important segment of the "Internet of Things" is the growing number of medical devices requiring connectivity to the backbone of the system they are part of, as well as to the Internet itself. The amount of data to be managed is huge, there are information privacy issues and regulatory hurdles galore. Plus, the development process for devices in this category can be daunting. One important tool for easing the development tasks is an environment specifically tailored for them. A team comprising an IC maker and OS supplier is offering just such a product, which they call "an intelligent framework."

Serving Up More Intelligent Automation

Serving Up More Intelligent Automation
New embedded servers specifically designed for industrial automation applications are designed to allow fast installation of CPU cooler brackets, Cfast memory, and miniPCIe modules. The boxes are essentially basic platforms that users can customize with hardware and software add-ons to manage every thing from sophisticated digital signage to factory-floor control or monitoring. For the latter purpose, a complimentary software add-on, available from the manufacturer, helps developers create custom user interfaces.

New ADC Focuses on Imaging

New ADC Focuses on Imaging Whether a medical or industrial imaging system — ultrasound, security X-ray, non-destructive testing — is portable or or not, minimizing power consumption is a characteristic that is high on most designers' list of goals. This is especially true in high channel-density applications, so an analog front end that is optimized for high functional density and lowest possible power drain would be a welcome addition the the design palette. One IC supplier has introduced a device that it believes fills the bill and then some.
