Pictures Can Be Worth More Than 1,000 Words

Computer vision has evolved to the point where it is ready to expand into applications beyond machine vision in automation and similar uses. Thanks to major advances in the functional density of processors, image sensors, memories, and other chip-level devices, as well as the concurrent development of powerful software tools, embedded vision applications can extract huge amounts of information from images of all kinds. The emergence of true cross-platform tools such as OpenCV is accelerating the spread of embedded vision into new application areas.

RTOS Helps Secure Battlefield Networks

RTOS Helps Secure Battlefield Networks Defense platforms face a broad array of physical threats from enemy weapons. But with the increased dependence of these platforms on the availability of networked data, cyber threats can be as devastating to mission success as missiles and bullets. With battlefield commanders requesting more wireless connectivity, the security threats to electronic systems could expand at exponential rates. To counter these threats, system designers turn to layered security approaches, not the least important of which is a secure RTOS.

Reach Out and Touch an Embedded HMI

Reach Out and Touch an Embedded HMI Human-machine interfaces (HMIs) are becoming more common in non-industrial applications, such as retail. But the kind of mundane HMI found on most ATMs won't really do the job of helping to sell products when the human user is a potential retail customer. In that type of situation, an interface that mimics the kinds that people use every day, such as those found on tablets and smartphones, is a requirement. One vendor offers an embedded solution that enables customers to gather product information, manipulate the image of the product to get different views, all using the kinds of touchscreen moves used for tablets and smartphones.

Doing Hard (Real) Time Audio Design Debug

Doing Hard (Real) Time Audio Design Debug Digital audio systems, from minuscule MP3 players to sports arena sound systems, rely on hard real-time computing, and low-latency, deterministic transport. Event-driven processing is an asset in developing embedded designs for audio applications that meet these criteria. The developer of the first 32-bit event-driven embedded processor has released a set of tools to help engineers using the processor to debug designs reliably and significantly reduce time to market.

Racing Away from Multithread Problems

Racing Away from Multithread Problems Multi-core processors are powerful, but sometimes writing the multithread code required to take advantage of that power can be powerfully troublesome. Dealing with concurrency is not one of the strengths of C or C++. One potential pitfall is the race condition, of which there are a few varieties. The author of a piece on the ins and outs of writing good code for multicore processors claims there is no such thing as a harmless data race condition. He recommends a combination of static and dynamic analysis to avoid problems, offering several examples.

Embedded Linux Waddles On

Embedded Linux Waddles On Proliferation of Linux-based operating systems in embedded applications continues at a rapid pace, and improvements are keeping pace with the growing application base. At the 2012 Embedded Linux Conference, an applications engineer from Sony gave a presentation on the status and near-term future of embedded Linux. The session is nearly an hour long, but it is worth the investment in time to learn about the improvements to the Linux kernel, improvements to embedded-related sub-systems, and new industry initiatives likely to affect embedded Linux developers in the future.

Android Fragmentation: Threat or Menace?

Android Fragmentation: Threat or Menace? According to this analysis, the often-complained-about fragmentation of Google's Android OS — too many builds spanning too many versions, too many devices — is neither threat nor menace. The study claims that 73% of Android handsets are running Android 2.3, while 23% are running Android 2.2. While it is true, the study says, that developers working in Apple's iOS environment have only one screen size and form factor to consider, over 90% of Android are based on one of only five options. Basically, the message is to quit worrying and keep developing.

Why the Right Touch Matters

Why the Right Touch Matters Checklists are one of the tools employed in hospital operating rooms with increasing frequency, with the goal — and documented result — of better patient outcomes. A manufacturer of touchscreen displays offers a checklist to help designers choose the touchscreen technology best suited to their medical device applications. The checklist is supported by a review of available technologies and design considerations. With over 1,200 touchscreen technology patents out there, designers can use all the help they can get.
