Tesla Plans Advanced Battery Factory
Tesla Plans Advanced Battery Factory

By the time this is read, EV maker Tesla will have revealed detailed plans for its Giga battery factory. Initial reports indicate the facility will integrate all aspects of battery production — from precursor materials to cell, module, and pack production.

The goal is three-fold: accelerate the pace of battery innovation; drive down battery costs; and "create a compelling and affordable electric car in approximately three years."

Electric Cars Level Load at Offices

Electric Cars Level Load at Offices Nissan led the charge for supplemental site power with the "Leaf-to-Home" program where owners could charge their cars at night, and discharge them for facility daytime peak shaving. A scaled-up "Vehicle-to-Building" test at a company facility enables up to six vehicles to do the same while ensuring the cars are charged for the drive home, according to Phys.org.

Plug-in Production Projected to Surge

Plug-in Production Projected to Surge
According to market research firm IHS Automotive, worldwide production of electric and hybrid plug-in vehicles will surge 67% this year (from 242,000 to 403,000 units). Last year, the segment saw a healthy 44% growth. Tighter emission standards and new models from European automakers means buyers in Europe will account for much of the sales. Model price drops will also contribute to market growth, along with greater range.

Tracked EV Goes in Snow

Tracked EV Goes in Snow Yvon Martel's MTT-136 (My Track Technology) is a tracked electric-powered vehicle that can go up to 136 miles before recharging. The machine can traverse snow and terrain while towing or pushing various implements; it can also negotiate stairways. Maximum range is available on a full eight hour charge and a 15 minute charge gives about 28 miles range. Québécois Martel is seeking manufacturers to produce the MTT for civil and military uses.

Peugeot Proposes Air Hybrid Vehicle

Peugeot Proposes Air Hybrid Vehicle
Conventional wisdom says air cars are not practical. At Peugeot Citroën, however, engineers are developing an alternate powertrain which uses a small gas engine to drive an onboard air compressor as well as power a car. The pressurized air is available to help drive the vehicle without stopping to recharge the air storage cylinders. Unique is the variable transmission, which uses hydraulics as opposed to a conventional hydrodynamic automatic transmission.

Parking a Problem for EV Acceptance

Parking a Problem for EV Acceptance If you don't have a place to park and charge a battery-powered vehicle, would you buy one? Probably not. Parking issues, according to a Carnegie-Mellon University study, are slowing EV market penetration. More investment in residential electrical infrastructure is needed if forecasted EV adaption rates are to be attained.

Synchronizer Smoothes HEV Shifting

Synchronizer Smoothes HEV Shifting
A recently-introduced, multi-speed HEV transmission claims 40% less weight and 15% less energy consumption compared with conventional, single-speed HEV transmissions. Credit a novel synchronizer layout for the savings. The design separates the friction and latching synchronizer functions, with multi-cone clutches for uninterrupted torque with no energy used to hold the transmission in gear.

EV Driver Survey Surprises

EV Driver Survey Surprises Contrary to most public and media pronouncements, drivers of electric vehicles name power, speed, and performance as the best attributes of their cars — not the savings in gas or the environmental benefits. A survey of 68 "early adapters" reveals other interesting facts, such as "quietness matters." Learn why the opinions of these few impact how electrical vehicle acceptance may, or may not, spread to the mass market.
