You may have seen those old electric buses connected by pantographs to
overhead wires still in use in some cities. Now Siemens is developing a
variation on that theme with its "eHighway"
concept for trucking (view video). The idea is to use such electricity
infrastructure to power pantograph-equipped trucks along express highways. For
"off-grid" operation, the trucks would have diesel or other engines.
Besides reduced emissions, electric drives produce less noise pollution.

Is U.S. Plug-in Effort Doomed?
Plans for one million plug-in vehicles on the road by 2015 may be doomed to failure say many auto industry analysts. Even with tax incentives, plug-ins are only 0.1% of total light vehicle sales (about 50,000), and if sales somehow jump several fold, it will still be a niche market — mainly because of their cost vs gas engine cars. On the other hand, President Obama's goal of a million plug-ins seems more modest when compared to China's target of five million.

Efficient Vehicles Pose 'Catch 22' for State Revenues
Similar to the way an increase in the taxes on cigarettes resulted in a decrease in the overall number of smokers paying those taxes, fuel efficient hybrids and electric vehicles are giving U.S. state regulators pause about declining fuel tax revenues used for road maintenance. Alternative funding ideas,
however, are not popular with the public: a tax based on miles driven, or
drive time during peak traffic hours.
Hub Motors Convert Mercedes Diesel into a Hybrid
High-performance aftermarket tuner Brabus has integrated Protean Electric's 110 hp wheel-hub electric motors into the rear wheels of a Mercedes E Class turbodiesel — effectively creating a luxury hybrid. The car made its U.S. debut earlier this year in Detroit at the SAE Congress. Protean says the performance and wheel packaging advantages outweigh any unsprung weight degradation on suspension dynamics. An all-electric version may even be in the works.
Center Offers Hybrid/EV Test Rides and Drives
GE has opened its Vehicle Innovation Center in Eden Prairie, MN, where businesses, industry groups, and researchers can sample electric, hybrid, and natural-gas and hydrogen fuel vehicles — as well as the company's enabling technologies. The center's private test track will allow potential users to better determine the overall costs and benefits of investing in such powertrains for fleet uses.
SUV Gets Electric Drivetrain
EV developer MotoCzysz is adapting Brazil's TAC Motors' Stark small SUV to run on all-electric power. The eStark uses MotoCzysz' D1g1tal Dr1ve powertrain module, which is a self-contained unit housing a liquid-cooled electric motor, inverter, differential, cooling system, and electronics. All the automaker adds is a battery, cooling hookups, and low-voltage wiring connections. For those anxious about range when off-roading, no word yet on how far it will go.
Fuel Cells Drive Electric Lift Trucks
Earlier this year, Air Products reported it had delivered more than 1,000 hydrogen fuel-cell powered electric forklifts in the U.S. The lift trucks only need "fill ups" once or twice daily, depending on duty cycle, without any of the change-out or charging downtime of battery powered lifts. Another advantage: minimal performance degradation when used in coolers or cold storage facilities.
