Interconnects Deserve Respect
Interconnects Deserve Respect

Interconnects, even in mission-critical military systems, are often considered low-tech elements and are looked upon as the Rodney Dangerfields of electronics. But the reality is that interconnects are called upon to tie critical system elements together and to do so reliably in all sorts of extreme conditions. This piece at defenseelectronicsmag.com extolls the virtues of several categories of military-grade interconnects.

Don't be Caught Sleeping on COTS

Don't be Caught Sleeping on COTS In order to avoid the "$600 toilet seat" controversies of the past, the U.S. Department of Defense has, for several years, urged contractors to use lower-cost commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products in their systems whenever possible. But, as this supplier of obsolete semiconductors points out, going the COTS route requires an extra level of diligence on the part of the purchasing entity.

COTS Video a 'Mixed Bag' for Defense Uses

COTS Video a 'Mixed Bag' for Defense Uses Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) consumer components being increasingly used in defense and aerospace video applications are a mixed blessing, according to Alan Simmond, engineering director for Creative Electronics Systems. The strong consumer market features high integration and low prices in systems including high-definition televisions and set-top boxes. In military use (such as surveillance and reconnaissance), components from these systems can have a short product cycle and require in-field bug fixes.

Rounding Up CompactPCI Serial Boards

Rounding Up CompactPCI Serial Boards
COTS Journal has rounded up the usual suspects in its review of serial single-board computers (SBCs) built on the CompactPCI form factor. The group offers several choices of processor types and I/O features, enough to make the most demanding system designers and integrators happy.

Is DNA Marking Really the Answer?

Is DNA Marking Really the Answer?
Marking ICs with plant-based DNA, a technique developed by Applied DNA Sciences, was almost immediately seized upon by the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) as a nearly foolproof anti-counterfeiting measure. The agency even went so far as to say it would reimburse compliant IC makers for the substantial expense of implementing the method. But some suppliers are not pleased with the mandate, reimbursement or not.

MEMS Accelerometer Targets Automotive Applications

MEMS Accelerometer Targets Automotive Applications Designed specifically for such advanced automotive applications as electrically-controlled suspension and engine anti-vibration, this analog MEMS-based accelerometer measures just 7 mm x 8.6 mm x 3.3 mm and survives 70,000 g shock. With a measurement range of -2.11 g to +2.11 g (and a corresponding output of 0 V to +5 V DC), the device includes a +1 g offset to compensate for earth's gravity.
