The new product, designated CM500, is rated IP-65, ideal for shipboard applications and other harsh environments. Military ARMs on Customizable SoCs
A component supplier with a history of providing high-reliability components that stretches back to the Apollo program has introduced a series of military-grade customizable systems-on-a-chip (cSoCs). The devices, which incorporate integrated ARM Cortex-M3-based processors and flash-based reprogrammability, are screened for reliability across the entire military temperature range. Although no class is specified, the manufacturer claims the chips are immune to radiation-induced configuration upsets.
SBCs are Tough Enough
Single-board computers (SBCs) offer compact processing solutions for a wide variety of military applications. One supplier has introduced a series of "rugged" SBCs that carry either a single-core Atom D425 or dual-core D525. The boards come in the EPIC form factor and provide slots and connectors for interface with several other formats. The boards are fully tested for resistance to shock and vibration according to the test methods in MIL-STD-202G.
Quick Turnaround for Miltary-grade Connectors
Demand for military-grade products represents single-digit or smaller percentages of the various electronic components markets. Thus, it is refreshing to see a supplier make an extra effort to respond to customer needs more efficiently and with shorter turnaround times. A major player in the market for military-grade circular connectors has redesigned its line of MIL-DTL-38999 parts for easier and quicker assembly and test. One new manufacturing facility is already up and running in the UK to supply that market locally.
